Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 47th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 16.449/60.93, Now #22; Best prior run: 14.735/59.58, Was #22

2:21 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 30 percent, barometer 29.14 inches, adjusted altitude 1,752 feet, track temperature 81 degrees.

Steven's shook hard yesterday and clicked it of way early. The car does a little dance at the hit and he clicks it again.

Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.727/205.69, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.809/199.46, Was #21
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.733/205.38, Now #21; Best prior run: 15.230/56.48, Was #23

Both cars improve, but no joy for either. Rice's car moves around at the hit.

Left Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 6.703/206.57, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.734/206.16, Was #22
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.890/205.07, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.707/206.54, Was #18

Max Naylor is on the bump spot at 6.696. Rizzo improves and Krisher goes backwards in his tuneup. Still no sub-one second sixty foot times yet.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.723/206.04, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.729/205.79, Was #21
Right Lane: Max Naylor Runs 6.675/207.37, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.696/206.48, Was #16

Big move towards the center line for Morgan and it cost's him. Naylor moves off the bump to the current #7 spot with a nice pass.Max Naylor's incremental times: 60ft-0.995 sec., 330ft-2.796, 660ft-4.297/164.25mph, 1,000ft-5.587

Left Lane: Erica Enders No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.707/206.61, Was #18
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.690/207.24, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.696/206.80, Was #16

Enders' has problems and is pushed back from the line. The engine left a mess and they are sweeping her lane.

V. Gaines is on the bump spot at 6.696 and picks up a few thousands to go into the #14 spot. Justin Humphreys is now on the bump spot at 6.696 and will be up in the next pair.

Left Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 6.698/206.73, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.696/206.86, Was #16
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.640/207.85, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.691/206.64, Was #15

2:39 p.m. Lots of scrubbing and scrapping in the left lane, but we are finally back to qualifying. POW! Say Hello to your new #1 qualifier! Johnson cards a .987 sixty foot and makes a statement. Humphreys doesn't improve and will stay #16, as everyone who could bump him has already run.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.641/208.46, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.690/207.37, Was #14
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.664/208.46, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.677/207.43, Was #11

Six sixty fours are now cheap and two more move both cars well into the current top half of the field.

Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.669/207.91, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.689/207.91, Was #14
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.667/207.75, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.676/207.18, Was #12

And the hits keep coming with these two bumping into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.659/207.82, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.682/207.34, Was #14
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.689/207.46, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.676/207.56, Was #13

Johnson slows a little and takes over Koretsky's #14 spot, while he finds some more power and moves up to the current #5 spot. Nice pass!

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.679/206.80, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.671/207.43, Was #10
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.669/207.75, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.673/207.30, Was #12

Yates said that he was happy to run as well as he did yesterday in the tough right lane. He won't be happy with this pass as he can only muster a 1.004 sixty foot time. Standfield squeezes out some more power to move up two spots.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.684/207.37, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.666/207.82, Was #7
Right Lane: Roger Brogdon Runs 6.690/207.69, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.672/197.13, Was #12

No joy for these two as both slow from yesterday.

Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.657/207.69, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.656/207.94, Was #4
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 11.947/75.04, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.647/208.33, Was #3

Last pair for the session and Anderson is a little loose on the hit and slows. Connolly basically repeats from yesterday and will stay #4 with another chance tomorrow.
