Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Darryl Jackman

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 47th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mike Drake No Time, Now #27; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.749/254.42, Now #6; No Prior Run

1:21 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 30 percent, barometer 29.18 inches, adjusted altitude 1,780 feet, track temperature 84 degrees.

Drake's car did not start and he was pushed away after Thompson made his run. Thompson shook his brains out to about 100ft and had to lift. After the slap he runs numbers that put him in the top half.

Left Lane: Pete Swayne Runs 5.929/251.53, Now #15; Best prior run: 17.730/54.84, Was #24
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.557/260.36, Now #2; No Prior Run

Payne makes up for his centerline violation yesterday and moves in behind Manzo. He just catch Manzo's Thursday shot. Swayne steps up but is way down in the order.

Left Lane: Larry Miner Runs 8.700/116.82, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.415/237.71, Was #21
Right Lane: Rian Konno Runs 7.707/175.41, Now #22; Best prior run: 16.319/54.00, Was #25

Both of the engines in these cars sounded like they took turns hitting about 11k on the rpm chart. Both lost traction at the hit and both got very loose. They both looked loose as the swapped clouds of tire smoke.

Left Lane: Jeff Carroll Runs 6.816/144.38, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.257/233.28, Was #20
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 6.311/183.92, Now #21; Best prior run: 15.227/54.45, Was #25

Carroll took a pretty wild ride as his Monte Carlo launched toward the center line and refused to come back to center. He just missed going into Gordon's lane and finally lifted. Gordon sounded like he lost a burst panel at about 1000ft and the speed certainly indicates that.

Left Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 5.990/230.33, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.234/203.00, Was #19
Right Lane: Dale Van Gundy Runs 9.295/116.55, Now #24; Best prior run: 12.702/85.95, Was #25

It appears that De Joria picked up her first official five second pass in open competition. That was a career best in both ET and mph. Van Gundy shook hard and then coasted on out.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.732/255.24, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.891/240.12, Was #14
Right Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 5.741/252.14, Now #8; Best prior run: 9.873/119.32, Was #25

Finally we have a side by side pair and both go into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: John Patton Runs 5.831/240.25, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.787/239.27, Was #13
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 6.032/244.65, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.029/243.85, Was #20

Well, Bellemeur is consistent but just a bit too slow to push his way into the field. Patton fails to improve.

Left Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 5.721/249.67, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.782/246.66, Was #12
Right Lane: Hank Coolidge Runs 5.794/248.98, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.022/248.29, Was #19

Harrington gets a bump and goes into the top half. Coolidge picks up over two tenths and bumps into the show. That bumps Swayne from the program with one hit left this afternoon.

Left Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 5.780/252.95, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.770/250.46, Was #12
Right Lane: Paul Crifasi Runs 6.087/226.66, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.950/242.41, Was #18

This just wasn't any fun for either team. Crifasi made almost a clean sweep of the cones in the right lane. He got everything but the 60ft and 1000ft markers. In the other lane Rupert couldn't get the car stopped and wound up backing the Camaro into the kitty litter and through the first fence. A big cloud of dust and a disgusted looking Rupert came rolling out of the roof hatch. He appears to be ok, but the car may not be as lucky.

Left Lane: Brian Hough No Time, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.764/250.18, Was #11
Right Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 5.864/231.99, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.831/230.06, Was #16

Kuhns uses a lot of real estate as he traverses Parker Avenue. He's about .03 slower than his first attempt and that means he remains on the bump spot. Hough blew the tires off and coasted to a stop about 15ft off the starting line.

Left Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.629/256.41, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.682/255.58, Was #5
Right Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 9.917/78.31, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.788/242.10, Was #14

Taylor with a .940 60ft number and about .06 better than his Thursday run. He moves up one spot to #4. Williamson shook and was forced to call it off.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.727/220.48, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.623/257.14, Was #3
Right Lane: Ken Kraus Runs 5.710/248.11, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.700/253.42, Was #6

Tasca loses about a tenth from his Thursday numbers, and even worse, he lightens his wallet as he explodes something in the engine compartment. There was a audible boom and a visible fire just for an instant. Kraus just about matches his Thursday numbers.

Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.508/263.00, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.507/263.46, Was #1
Right Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.674/253.04, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.661/250.92, Was #5

Manzo just continues to make this look easy. His speed on this run backs his record number from yesterday. Today's run was just .001 slower than Thursday. Frank Manzo's incremental times: 60ft-0.954 sec., 330ft-2.459, 660ft-3.640/209.79mph, 1,000ft-4.653. The Woz slows from his Thursday numbers just a tiny bit and he remains #5.
