Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Dave Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Jose Maldonado Runs 14.556/56.89, Now #1

1:41 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 43 percent, barometer 29.04 inches, adjusted altitude 2,372 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

Maldonado will get a single to start the session. After a strong Pro Stock Bike session, this should be a good round.

Maldonado misses the tune up and shakes and spins. The car makes a move toward the guard rail and he has to lift.

Left Lane: Tommy Brown Runs 6.722/204.79, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob Panella Runs 14.231/61.15, Now #2

Panella is running a Sox and Martin tribute scheme this weekend, but it doesn't help, as the car is all over the lane at the hit. Brown gets it down the track without drama.

Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.794/202.76, Now #3
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.725/206.32, Now #2

Watson is out first and then Jeggie drives on by. Two nice looking passes.

Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 11.977/74.55, Now #5
Right Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 7.070/201.79, Now #4

Koretsky's car makes a hard move towards the centerline and he has to lift. Rizzo is a little slow off the line and it costs him.

Left Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 6.727/205.01, Now #3
Right Lane: Tommy Lee Runs 6.753/206.26, Now #4

Lee's car moves out of the groove at 60 feet and he has to horse it back to the middle of the lane. He still runs a good tune up pass. Northrop makes a strong move off the line, but doesn't have enough top end power.

Left Lane: Max Naylor No Time, Now #12
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.729/206.45, Now #4

Naylor's car bucks and then leaves before the green to DQ the run. Martino moves into the current #4 spot without any drama.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.730/204.85, Now #5
Right Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.757/205.72, Now #7

Big move towards the centerline at the hit for Enders. She drives it back into the middle, but it costs some ET.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.745/205.98, Now #7
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.711/204.91, Now #1

Warren Johnson is sporting a decal on the front of his GTO celebrating his nomination to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. Johnson's car is snakey off the line and he finally straightens it out by mid-track. Gaines takes the current top spot with a quick, but not fast pass.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.723/205.85, Now #3
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.736/204.85, Now #8

Nice clean pass for Morgan even though he is far from the quickest in 60 feet [1.018 sec.]. Steven's run will anchor the top half of the field and Jose Maldonado is on the bump spot at 14.556.

Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.730/205.88, Now #7
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.739/205.32, Now #10

Yates continues to look for the tune up, while Standfield makes a strong pass into the current #7 spot.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 14.155/61.19, Now #18
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.719/206.23, Now #2

Kenny Koretsky is on the bump spot at 11.977. Jhnson's car goes dead left at the hit and he has to lift immediately. The "Other Johnson", Kurt, shows big power and runs well into the current #2 spot.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.724/206.76, Now #6
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.701/206.35, Now #1

Connolly finds the tune up and powers into the top spot for now. Edwards shows his consistency with another pass into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.677/205.94, Now #1
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.688/207.34, Now #2

The twin Summit cars come to the line to end the session. Line wrapped up the championship at Las Vegas, but the boss claims bragging rights for today with a big ET and the number one qualifying spot. Jason runs the big MPH to save face.

Warren Johnson is on the bump spot at 6.745.
