Pro Stock Motorcycle Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Darryl Jackman

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Freddie Camarena Runs 7.250/182.82, Now #1

1:21 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 43 percent, barometer 29.04 inches, adjusted altitude 2,372 feet, track temperature 99 degrees.

It's been very warn here in Southern California over the last week and the temperature is started to come up as the fog burns off. Camarena opens the party with a 7.250 right out of the box.

Right Lane: Connie Cohen No Time, Now #3

Cohen runs 7.414/172.19 but she started the clocks with the rear wheel. The time is thrown out and she'll be back for round two on Friday.

Left Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.118/186.95, Now #1
Right Lane: Chris Rivas Runs 7.236/180.77, Now #2

Berry steps up early in the rotation but does land a really good looking run. Rivas trails with his 7.23.

Left Lane: Marco Andreano Runs 7.162/181.98, Now #3
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.109/187.08, Now #1

Andreano drifted over towards the center all the way to half track. After that he hauled the bike back to the middle for a mid teen pass. Johnson goes right to the head of the class. That's going to change fast I'm sure.

Left Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 7.179/185.05, Now #5
Right Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.094/190.11, Now #1

Phillips is the first to push Johnson down a spot and he takes the pole. Gann to #5.

Left Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.059/189.84, Now #1
Right Lane: Matt Guidera Runs 7.087/185.59, Now #2

Treble and Guidera rock the field with a pair of stout runs. Both riders have had tough years and a win for either team here would be big.

Left Lane: GT Tonglet Runs 7.107/185.61, Now #4
Right Lane: Tom Bradford Runs 7.142/188.62, Now #7

Tonglet's numbers looked good on the low end of the track but the bike appeared to fall off just a bit from half track on. Bradford is in for the moment.

Left Lane: Geno Scali Runs 7.108/186.51, Now #6
Right Lane: Ryan Schnitz Runs 7.099/185.59, Now #4

Things are tightening up now.

Left Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 7.133/184.47, Now #9
Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.194/181.42, Now #13

Treble's run is looking better and better.

Left Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 7.081/183.10, Now #3
Right Lane: Angelle Sampey Runs 7.066/188.07, Now #2

Sampey is the first of the Army bikes to hit the starting line today. She still has an outside chance at the championship but would need a lot of help from others to take the title. She just misses Treble's time and holds down the #2 spot at the moment. Ellis slides into #3 on his Buell.

Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 7.106/184.70, Now #8
Right Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 7.020/191.00, Now #1

The two title hopefuls meet here in qualifying. Hines has a 37 point lead over Brown coming into the event. he certainly makes a statement here as he trumps the field and just misses a six second pass. Brown is in but barely makes the top half of the field. That closes out the first session of a tightly contested class.
