Shields and Harker Lead Qualifiers at NHRA Lucas Oil Series Event

Qualifying is complete at the Short Line Express Market Gambler Shootout, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The event is the last of 43 in the series and is the last chance for racers from across the country to earn divisional points toward divisional and national titles. Local favorite Duane Shields is the No. 1 qualifier in Top Alcohol Dragster and Steve Harker leads the Top Alcohol Funny Car pack. There were 24 Top Alcohol Dragsters and 26 Top Alcohol Funny Cars vying for eight qualifying spots in each category.

Shields, a Boulder City, Nev., resident, came into the final qualifying session of the race on the outside looking in at the eight-car field. However, his 5.349-seconds, 261.67 mph pass catapulted him to the top of the field. No. 2 qualifier, Sean O'Bannon of Alta Loma, Calif., also made a huge jump, going from the fourteenth spot with a 5.368-second pass at 267.53 mph.

A resident of Gainesville, Ga., Harker leads the Top Alcohol Funny Car field with his 5.646-second, 254.18 mph pass. Brian Hough, Junction City, Ore., is the second place qualifier with a 5.655-second, 254.18 mph effort.

Jim Cowan, Dewey, Ariz., set the pace in Comp Eliminator, Peter Biondo, Maspeth, N.Y., stayed in the top spot in Super Stock, as did Gene Buell, Hesperia, Calif., in Stock Eliminator. In Top Comp, Gary Groves, Provo, Utah, remained the No. 1 quaifier, and Mike Mitzel, Billings, Mont., also held on to the top spot in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson.

Racing continues Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Gates open at 8 a.m. and eliminations continue at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round of eliminations at noon.
