Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Pacific Division, Shortline Express Markets Gambler Shootout at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Ed Vickroy Runs 7.136/193.65, Now #16; No Prior Run

12:43 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 28 percent, barometer 28.26 inches, adjusted altitude 3,123 feet, track temperature 98 degrees. Kate Harker is on the bump spot at 5.612.

Vickroy did not make an attempt last night. His car labored to half track, then dropped a couple cylinders.

Left Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.515/259.81, Now #7; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Dave Heitzman No Time, Now #23; Best prior run: 15.663/73.36, Was #22

Federlin broke in the water last night, could not get the tires hooked up.

Heitzman is now down to one chance to make the field, his crew shutting it off in the water. Federlin did a great job of driving a very loose race car here, the car dancing from one side of the groove to the other. He saved the run and got in - for now, anyway. Now Joey Severance is on the bump spot at 5.585.

Left Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.670/262.69, Now #12; Best prior run: 13.312/77.80, Was #21
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.556/259.21, Now #8; Best prior run: 15.521/77.39, Was #22

These two ran as a pair last night, both lost traction very early in their run.

O'Bannon's car shook in the first 200 feet and he pedaled it, losing a lot of time. Shields got in on a nice pass, but just barely, replacing Severance on the bump spot after leaving a couple hundredths (or more) at the starting line with wheelspin.

Left Lane: Dick Garlets Runs 6.100/205.60, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.915/238.89, Was #16
Right Lane: Frank Dischbein Runs 5.597/256.26, Now #10; Best prior run: 11.248/65.57, Was #22

arlets had at least one dead cylinder and failed to improve. Dischbein failed to qualify in this already tough field, but ran career bests, both time and speed, on a nice, smooth pass.

Left Lane: Johnny Ahten Runs 5.850/227.42, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.902/218.83, Was #16
Right Lane: Mark Foster Runs 10.926/92.49, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.338/139.66, Was #22

Ahten had some kind of mechanical gremlin last night, the car trailing sparks all the way down the track.

This time around, Ahten lost a cylinder immediately and never picked it back up. Foster's car never developed any wheel speed and labored down the track.

Left Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.956/244.65, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.845/251.95, Was #14
Right Lane: Aaron Olivarez No Time, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.318/126.68, Was #21

Hitchman's car made a weak run last night, Olivarez's car shook and lost traction.

Olivarez lost traction in a cloud of tire smoke about 150 feet out and rolled to a stop just past the finish line. It appeared that the steering broke, the car erratically veering back and forth, then bouncing off the wall. Hitchman's car once again made a weak run, laboring down the track with at least one dropped cylinder.

Left Lane: Ashley Force Runs 5.895/249.30, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.615/262.90, Was #12
Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.508/254.90, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.738/137.37, Was #19

Force's car was slow off the mark and left a lot of elapsed time on the starting line. Nice pass by Whitely to bump into the field. Now Steve Federlin is on the bump spot at 5.515.

Left Lane: Kate Harker Runs 5.557/246.71, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.612/250.18, Was #12
Right Lane: Jeff Isbell Runs 8.306/103.90, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.665/145.06, Was #19

Another nice pass by Harker, moving up a couple spots but short of the bump time. Isabell spun and lost traction early.

Left Lane: Cody Perkins Runs 5.443/260.76, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.507/259.11, Was #5
Right Lane: Brian Smith No Time, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.865/247.97, Was #17

Smith made the burnout, backed up, then the crew shut it off. Perkins made a very nice run, with career-best numbers, to move into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Mark Niver No Time, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.494/240.98, Was #5
Right Lane: Joey Severance No Time, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.585/260.51, Was #11

As Niver's crew prepared to start the engine, they spotted something wrong and Niver climbed from the car, already in the field. Severance left before the tree came down, blew the tires loose almost immediately and coasted through. Oh-for-two.

Left Lane: Garrett Bateman Runs 5.578/244.74, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.381/262.08, Was #2
Right Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.838/181.06, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.510/232.47, Was #7

No help for either driver, no obvious problems in either lane.

Left Lane: John Finke Runs 5.408/266.53, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.371/263.67, Was #1
Right Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 5.611/246.39, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.461/253.04, Was #4

Both runs looked good, neither improved from their first run. Miersch lost ground to Finke at every timing increment, but there were no visible problems.
