Nostalgia Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Darryl Jackman

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Nostalgia Top Fuel at the Goodguys, 8th Annual Fuel and Gas Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Rick Rogers Runs 6.184/215.77, Now #10; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Pete Kaiser Runs 7.413/125.12, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.413/125.12, Was #16

12:01 p.m. Right on time the first pair of fuelers comes to life. Rogers was shut off yesterday and Kaiser was not here to make the first hit. Rogers was away first and disappeared behind a wall of smoke out of the left bank of cylinders. Kaiser got his first and only hit only to come up short of the field. Mendy Fry is on pole while Adam Sorokin holds down the bump at 7.153.

Left Lane: Scott Mason Runs 5.879/244.29, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.940/241.87, Was #6
Right Lane: John Shoemaker Runs 6.347/203.94, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.509/210.18, Was #13

Mason is having the best weekend of his career to this point and here in the final session he moves one spot higher in the top half of the show. Shoemaker picks up but still has some work if he stays in the field.

Left Lane: Brad Thompson Runs 5.832/243.20, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.853/228.07, Was #2
Right Lane: Mendy Fry Runs 6.707/141.33, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.807/251.46, Was #1

Thompson improves slightly but remains #2. Fry hurt the engine pretty good on that one and we're down for a few.

Left Lane: Bill Dunlap Runs 6.213/223.54, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.268/194.72, Was #12
Right Lane: Jack Harris Runs 6.240/183.18, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.783/168.06, Was #15

We're back in business and next up is Dunlap and Harris. We're down again. Harris starts with heavy smoke out of the pipes at about 800 feet. A dense wall followed by the track folks saying the right lane was 'toast'. Dunlap picks up a nickel but no spots in the field. Harris picks off a couple of spots but he and the crew have some work to do.

Left Lane: Rick White Runs 5.843/243.50, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.033/246.84, Was #8
Right Lane: Jim Murphy Runs 5.990/228.25, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.190/228.36, Was #11

White shows why he was the champ from 2005 as he lays down some pretty good numbers and goes to #3. Again the improvement seems to have come at the cost of an engine as that mosquito abatement program continues. Lots and lots of smoke should keep the skeeters away at least. Murphy goes top half but Beebe has some head scratching to do before the next round.

Left Lane: Brendan Murry Runs 6.034/210.23, Now #10; Best prior run: 8.058/107.60, Was #18
Right Lane: Brett Harris Runs 5.789/261.24, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.855/259.36, Was #4

That didn't take to long. The call is 'Fire the next pair' and off we go. Harris takes the Top Fuel MPH record and throws it right in the trash. Of course he already held the record so.....

Left Lane: Shannon Stuart Runs 5.941/242.32, Now #8; Best prior run: 8.058/55.76, Was #19
Right Lane: Dan Rusk Runs 6.204/209.39, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.518/174.75, Was #16

Rusk gets off the bubble with one of the best runs I've seen him make in the Arizona based fueler. Stuart goes from outside to the top half of the field in only 5.941 seconds. Nice runs for both!

Left Lane: Adam Sorokin Runs 5.762/247.04, Now #1; Best prior run: 7.153/139.10, Was #18
Right Lane: Denver Schutz Runs 5.835/252.10, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.906/251.74, Was #7

Sorokin started the session on the bump and is now #18. Schutz has been pushed to #7. Holy no smoke! What tire pressure issue? So far we've seen 261 MPH and two 5.7s in this round. Certainly no issue today and I've had no reports of tire damage. There has been more oil poured of the racing surface today but the numbers have just been astounding. We'll be right back after the latest oil well is capped.

Right Lane: Rick McGee Runs 6.035/244.03, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.049/249.44, Was #13

McGee gets a single and shows the car is consistent at least. He remains #13.

Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.827/251.67, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.875/253.87, Was #7

Bellemeur will close out the Top Fuel final roud of qualifying as a right lane single. Sean takes no prisoners and moves all the way to #3 to close the session. I see Ron Capps in front of the tower so it must be time for Funny Car.
