Competition Eliminator Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Dan Bennett

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Pacific Division, Shortline Express Markets Gambler Shootout at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, amount over/under index, and position in order following run, class and class index:
Left Lane: Joey Tanksley Runs 7.077/189.84/-0.623, Now #1 C/D Index: 7.70
Right Lane: Ed Sigmon Runs 8.842/139.72/-0.538, Now #2 C/SR Index: 9.38

5:23 p.m.

Left Lane: Joe Mozeris Runs 13.664/91.08/5.804, Now #4 B/AA Index: 7.86
Right Lane: Colt Mikel Runs 8.500/157.87/-0.580, Now #2 B/TA Index: 9.08

Left Lane: Ginger Welfringer Runs 8.035/172.50/0.175, Now #5 B/AA Index: 7.86
Right Lane: J. Allen Sherman Runs 8.499/158.13/-0.581, Now #2 B/TA Index: 9.08

Ginger hits the tires hard and snakes all the way to about the 250 foot mark.

Lots of smoke across the finish line and up the hill in the right lane. Sherman stood it up on the launch so there may have been some physical damage when it landed.

We're down for a cleanup in the right lane pretty far down the shut off area.

Left Lane: Mark Stewart Runs 9.021/146.65/-0.549, Now #4 G/SMA Index: 9.57
Right Lane: Jeff Lane No Time, Now #8 B/SR Index: 8.74

Lane stood straight up and headed for the centerline after the landing.

Stewart fishtailed just like the previous car.

We were just informed that Lane crossed the centerline.

Left Lane: Ross Wilson Runs 8.394/156.84/-0.526, Now #6 C/SMA Index: 8.92
Right Lane: Brad Plourd Runs 19.137/66.30/11.067, Now #9 C/ED Index: 8.07

Left Lane: Dave Raybourn Runs 16.084/65.35/6.794, Now #10 E/SMA Index: 9.29
Right Lane: Clarence Thomas Runs 7.817/169.72/-0.043, Now #7 B/AA Index: 7.86

Raybourn stands up and then heads right. He doesn't cross the line but has to shut off

Left Lane: Vinnie Deceglie Runs 6.638/209.07/-0.642, Now #1 A/A Index: 7.28
Right Lane: Bob Marshall Runs 7.460/188.17/-0.400, Now #8 B/AA Index: 7.86

We were a bit apprehensive about a high horsepower car considering what we've been seeing off the starting line.

But Deceglie shows us how it's done. The car drifts towards the center at the big end, but obviously got most of it on this pass and goes to the top.

Left Lane: Scott Hedlund Runs 8.337/161.02/-0.553, Now #5 B/SM Index: 8.89
Right Lane: Bryan Morrison Runs 8.349/159.68/-0.511, Now #9 G/AA Index: 8.86

Left Lane: Randy Goff Runs 8.309/155.81/-0.191, Now #12 E/A Index: 8.50
Right Lane: David Beckley Runs 6.787/204.88/-0.703, Now #1 A/AA Index: 7.49

Beckley shows Deceglie how it's done.

That was a shot!

Left Lane: Dave Barcelon Runs 8.664/155.40/-0.546, Now #9 G/A Index: 9.21
Right Lane: Jim Cowan Runs 8.368/158.17/-0.712, Now #1 D/EA Index: 9.08

Barcelon leaves slightly to the right and runs close the the center most of the way down.

Cowan jumps to the top. It's good air, and with the altitude factor we're having big fun

Left Lane: Mike DePalma Runs 8.214/162.90/-0.626, Now #4 B/A Index: 8.84
Right Lane: Danny Gruninger Runs 7.205/189.84/-0.615, Now #6 B/A Index: 7.82

Left Lane: Bo Butner Runs 9.395/109.62/1.615, Now #20 AA/SM Index: 7.78
Right Lane: Tom Mettler Runs 7.553/179.40/-0.657, Now #3 PST Index: 8.21

I couldn't see the problem with Butner's pass other than the car didn't go anywhere off the line. It ran 1.22 60 foot and wnet downlhill from there.

Left Lane: Adam Bowdish Runs 9.041/147.31/-0.539, Now #14 F/SM Index: 9.58
Right Lane: Jeff Taylor Runs 8.724/149.35/-0.646, Now #4 E/SM Index: 9.37

Left Lane: John Edwards Runs 7.603/177.65/-0.587, Now #9 C/AA Index: 8.19
Right Lane: Jacklyn Gebhardt Runs 10.612/74.30/3.252, Now #24 A/ED Index: 7.36

Gebhardt's car moves right, just next to the wall and she clicks it off.

Left Lane: Fred Gross Runs 8.624/156.41/-0.586, Now #11 F/A Index: 9.21
Right Lane: Lee Sharp Runs 8.584/155.88/-0.666, Now #3 C/SMA Index: 9.25

Is it fast here? 586 under doesn't get you in the top 10 and we're not even finished with the session.

Left Lane: Todd Patterson Runs 7.873/171.86/-0.627, Now #7 E/A Index: 8.50
Right Lane: John Mihovetz Runs 6.679/206.48/-0.561, Now #15 BB/AT Index: 7.24

Milhovetz's car is a twin turbo, and very cool.

Gotta love it -- 206 and change.

Left Lane: Tom Huggins Runs 7.177/190.65/-0.643, Now #6 B/A Index: 7.82
Right Lane: Bryan Fitzgerald Runs 8.004/167.36/-0.496, Now #24 E/AA Index: 8.50

Huggins make a slow hook to the left but brings it back into the groove. He still lays down a great pass.

Left Lane: Randy Jones Runs 9.008/149.40/-0.572, Now #16 F/SM Index: 9.58
Right Lane: Sam Blaylock Sr. Runs 7.843/177.74/-0.017, Now #29 B/AA Index: 7.86

And that ends an exceptional session. We understand that 12 records were set.
