BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Nostalgia Top Fuel at the California Hot Rod Reunion, 15th California Hotrod Reunion, presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California: Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 7917 Brad Thompson 747 Mark Malde E1 ****WINNER**** 0.105 5.856 235.04 0.112 6.291 179.14 Qualified: #3 5.849 222.93 #14 5.970 244.036:43 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 35 percent, barometer 29.36 inches, adjusted altitude 2,404 feet.
Fresh off of his first '5' Malde faces off with Thompson. Malde can't duplicate as the Chevy began eating it's self alive somewhere
around 1000 feet. Thompson actually never trailed at any marker. Uh oh...we have oil on the course, again. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 766 Adam Sorokin 701 Rick McGee E1 ****WINNER**** 0.078 6.035 235.29 0.123 6.094 235.97 Qualified: #1 5.806 255.39 #16 6.054 229.477:19 p.m. Say. Wasn't THAT fun! There was more than a little oil that time. Let's see. Seven more pair at 30 minutes...midnight? Hope not. I'm really looking forward to Cacklefest. This was a seesaw affair as Sorokin took an early lead but had to pedal a few times. McGee couldn't catch Sorokin so his weekend is done. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 792 Jason Richey 780 Pete Kaiser E1 ****WINNER**** 0.146 5.901 256.92 0.114 10.915 62.61 Qualified: #2 5.833 259.81 #15 6.022 248.13Richey was certainly second at the hit but Kaiser had problems around 330 and he started coasting. Richey drove around him early and took the win. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 787 Shannon Stuart 692 John Shoemaker E1 -0.118 No Time No Time Qualified: #4 5.867 249.44 #13 5.962 253.02Ok. Here I am involved with another strange one. Stuart redlighted but Shoemaker left before the tree. Stuart compounded problem when he crossed the stripe and took out a cone. This disqualified him. This means that under some rules (I've been there when this happened) both drivers are out that there is a single in round two. Stay tuned to Sunday to see what's decided. I'm DQing them both but that is still open to discussion. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 799 Sean Bellemeur 722 Jack Harris E1 0.078 7.038 131.46 ****WINNER**** 0.197 9.196 91.75 Qualified: #6 5.868 254.74 #11 5.953 230.71Bellemeur got to the other end first but it was only after getting really loose and crossing the centerline and taking out some cones. Both drivers had handling problems but Harris looks to come away with the win. It will be Thompson and harris in round two with Thompson having lane choice. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 705 Brett Harris 708 Howard Haight E1 0.156 5.950 253.02 ****WINNER**** 0.104 5.945 257.43 Qualified: #7 5.895 259.51 #10 5.945 256.84The next Harris tries to advance. This is the session that just won't end. It's now 8:05 p.m. and all we've done is run four pair of Top Fuel cars. Let's see if our luck improves. Harris has lots of power in the car but even he can't overcome the lead that Haight got at the light. ETs were close but the software shows a 21 foot win for Haight. Haight and Richey next round with Richey having choice. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 781 Mendy Fry 532 Scott Mason E1 ****WINNER**** 0.102 7.800 203.20 0.197 8.055 146.53 Qualified: #8 5.928 242.13 #9 5.935 241.48Wah HOOO! Mason was just a bit later than Fry but Fry was up in smoke before 200 feet. Fry trailed at 60 feet, 330 feet and all the way to 1000 feet. After that her car hooked and she drove around Mason before the stripe. The crowd went wild and boy, was that FUN! Sorokin will have lane choice on Sunday. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 724 Denver Schutz 774 Jim Murphy E1 0.165 7.949 108.73 ****WINNER**** 0.125 6.564 177.27 Qualified: #5 5.867 247.45 #12 5.961 230.47At last! The final pair before Cacklefest! Murphy trailed at 330 but this was another pedaling contest. The winner was Murphy and I think the Top Fuel guys are happy to have that round OVER. Next up is a couple of Fuel Altereds..that ought to be fun. Murphy will get the single in round two due to the double DQ in this round.
