Nostalgia Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Darryl Jackman

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Nostalgia Top Fuel at the California Hot Rod Reunion, 15th California Hotrod Reunion, presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Brendan Murry Runs 6.333/194.72, Now #15; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jim Murphy Runs 5.961/230.47, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.064/242.71, Was #14

2:46 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 82 degrees, relative humidity 42 percent, barometer 29.39 inches, adjusted altitude 2,512 feet.

It's started to heat up a little bit and the air has gone away just a bit more so this is going to be a difficult session for the AA/FDs. The tuners are certainly going to have their hands full. Murry lost his first pass yesterday due to an encounter with a marker in the middle of the track. Murry pushes into the bottom of the field but Murphy makes himself a bit safer.

Left Lane: Pete Kaiser Runs 6.022/248.13, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ron Maroney Runs 6.777/200.13, Now #19; No Prior Run

Neither driver has a lap in the books as of yet so this is do or die. Kaiser had his run DQd yesterday for a lane violation and I don't believe Maroney made an attempt. Kaiser slips into the 13th qualifying spot and I'm not certain that will hold up. Maroney was on and off the pedal early in the run and will be a spectator from here on out.

Left Lane: Scott Mason Runs 5.935/241.48, Now #8; Best prior run: 13.103/63.65, Was #23
Right Lane: Bill Dunlap Runs 6.069/224.04, Now #17; No Prior Run

Dunlap was the last of the cars to lose their runs due to lane violations on Friday so it's one shot qualifying for him. Mason was very loose yesterday and needs one good one. Dunlap appeared to get a face full of oil and had to lift early in the run. Mason makes the show in the top half.

Left Lane: Howard Haight Runs 5.945/256.84, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.951/254.66, Was #9
Right Lane: Denver Schutz Runs 5.901/248.96, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.867/247.45, Was #5

We're still cleaning up after Dunlap's little track tinkle and should be back to action soon. When that happens Haight will look to move into the top half and Schutz will be hunting for #1. Well, that took about 30 minutes but we're back in business. Both clean runs but the two teams involved in this pair remain in the same spots.

Left Lane: Mendy Fry Runs 5.928/242.13, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.062/239.61, Was #16
Right Lane: Rick McGee Runs 6.054/229.47, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.058/249.65, Was #15

McGee's crew is vying for the title of worlds largest this weekend. The crewcab is simply FULL of people. I'm surprised the front wheels stay on the ground. There was a large wall of smoke followed by a big Bang from McGee's racer. Looks like Tedford and that large crew will have their hands full to make the first round. Fry gets off the bump and into the top half of the show. Looks like we are down at 3:24 p.m. for another cleanup.

Left Lane: Dan Rusk Runs 6.706/167.16, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.003/195.77, Was #22
Right Lane: Jason Richey Runs 6.115/190.43, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.833/259.81, Was #2

3:33 p.m. and the cars come back to life. Richey is well off the pace from his first hit so he remains #2. Rusk left as well as I've ever seen him run but after half track the car fell off badly.

Right Lane: Rick White Runs 6.464/218.34, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.470/164.80, Was #19

White gets a single here in round two. Seems strange to see the Goodguys champ not in the show. After that run he's still not in. The car started wheel walking just about half track. No choice for him but to click it.

Right Lane: Jack Harris Runs 10.700/71.38, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.953/230.71, Was #11

Harris makes one of his patented hard burnouts and backs to the line in Cox Cheetah III. Harris shook the tires hard early in the run. He pedaled a couple of times then called it off. He remains #11.

Right Lane: Brett Harris Runs 5.895/259.51, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.915/260.19, Was #7

Now comes the second generation Harris and he certainly learned the burnout process from his dad. Talk about making it look easy. That was one of the cleanest runs of the session. Straight, hot and clean

Right Lane: Paul Jones Runs 6.425/218.87, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.517/205.62, Was #20

Paul Jones is out next in John Blanchard's pedal clutch AA/FD. He's well outside the field but with this car there's always a chance. Jones dumps the clutch with the rpms up the car appeared to bog then catch again. He picks a tenth of the ET he needed, but not enough.

Right Lane: Brad Thompson Runs 5.849/222.93, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.860/258.84, Was #3

Well. Looks like the kids aren't playing nice together and we have oil on the racing surface...again! Thompson hurt one a really nice looking run. At about 1000 feet a cylinder went out, followed but smoke and that dreaded substance. This is the session that never ends.

Left Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 6.838/172.84, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.868/254.74, Was #6
Right Lane: Adam Sorokin Runs 7.070/246.71, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.806/255.39, Was #1

When we come back from the oil situation from Thompson and Bellemeur will plug themselves back into their racers and we'll settle the Top Fuel title from the National Hotrod Reunion held in Bowling Green Kentucky. The final of that event was rained out and contested here. Bellemeur with a very weak burnout starts back to the line. Something not right? After all of that Sorokin smoked the tires at the hit and it was Bellemeur that got loose. Pedaled, then pulled away for the title of NHRR 2006. Congratulations to Bellemeur and the Plaza Team Mastercam fueler along with the Brian Van Dyke, Champion Speed Shop sponsored rail. Sorokin made a masterful attempt at recovering the car and stayed with it all the way to the stripe.
