Nostalgia Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Darryl Jackman

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Nostalgia Top Fuel at the California Hot Rod Reunion, 15th California Hotrod Reunion, presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Jack Harris Runs 5.953/230.71, Now #1
Right Lane: John Shoemaker Runs 5.962/253.02, Now #2

3:12 p.m. Harris is out to take another CHRR title driving for John Cox. Shoemaker is in a brand new AA/FD that is in shiny aluminum skin. Great openers for the pair and it's Shoemaker with a big speed!

Left Lane: Paul Jones Runs 6.517/205.62, Now #4
Right Lane: Mark Malde Runs 5.970/244.03, Now #3

Jones is in Blanchard's racer this weekend and he's off the pace early. Malde is really on pace and cards his first ever five second pass.

Left Lane: Denver Schutz Runs 5.867/247.45, Now #1
Right Lane: Mendy Fry Runs 6.062/239.61, Now #5

We're back after a little bit of oil on the racing surface. Fry might have been shedding a few parts as she got to the stripe. Not so for Schutz as the Rasin farmer makes his quickest pass ever.

Left Lane: Rick White Runs 6.470/164.80, Now #6
Right Lane: Brendan Murry Runs 8.505/97.21, Now #8

White was leaving a huge cloud of clutch dust in the wake of his run. Murry had the rpms go sky high at half track and he clicked it off quickly.

Left Lane: Brad Thompson Runs 5.860/258.84, Now #1
Right Lane: Shannon Stuart Runs 5.867/249.44, Now #2

Tell me this new asphault isn't good! Stuart runs his career best ET and Thompson runs a huge mph and takes over the #1 qualifying spot.

Left Lane: Adam Sorokin Runs 5.806/255.39, Now #1
Right Lane: Howard Haight Runs 5.951/254.66, Now #5

Another cracking pair of runs. Second generation racer, Sorokin, takes his ride to the top and bumps Thompson down a spot. Haight runs a big mph but the ET is just a bit off. Both cars disappeared behind a wall of smoke, marking the death of a few pistons.

Left Lane: Rick McGee Runs 6.058/249.65, Now #9
Right Lane: Dan Rusk Runs 7.003/195.77, Now #13

McGee was soft at 60 feet with a 1.12 number on the clocks. Not the way to run a five. Rusk had holes out and called it early.

Left Lane: Jim Murphy Runs 6.064/242.71, Now #11
Right Lane: Pete Kaiser Runs 6.366/169.84, Now #12

Neither driver or crew will be pleased with this one. Both showed signs of piston death and both nosed over very early in the run. Beebe will be back`to the drawing board for Murphy.

Left Lane: Brett Harris Runs 5.915/260.19, Now #6
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.868/254.74, Now #5

The hits just keep on coming from the AA/FDs. Harris misses the ET to take over the qualifying lead but does take top speed of the meet. That 260 mph thing just seems to stay with the Harris car.

Left Lane: Jason Richey Runs 5.833/259.81, Now #0
Right Lane: Scott Mason Runs 13.103/63.65, Now #7

Richey just misses the mark set by Sorokin. Mason has problems to end the session of Top Fuel
