SONOMA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 19th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Darren Nicholson Runs 5.580/259.46, Now #11; No Prior Run Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.451/253.95, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.519/256.41, Was #9 5:39 p.m. We open the second round of Alcohol with a pair of blown cars. Whiteley moves into the top half and Nicholson gets in after having first round problems. That bumped Sean O'Bannon from the field and puts Bateman on the bubble. Left Lane: Gregg Lawrence Runs 5.474/254.66, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.428/256.55, Was #6 Right Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 5.427/261.52, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.557/259.46, Was #10 Lawrence, in the A/Fuel car meets Johnson in the B/AD. Johnson goes around Lawrence and is now #6. Left Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.321/266.11, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.363/267.64, Was #1 Right Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.359/268.71, Now #2; Best prior run: 11.909/74.72, Was #17 What a pair that was! Shields and O'Bannon bump Morgan off the top spot and down to #3. O'Bannon's speed is also tops for the class at this event. Not bad for getting bumped a couple of cars back! Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 5.392/263.82, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.365/265.74, Was #3 Right Lane: Ashley Force Runs 5.407/265.53, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.401/266.58, Was #5 Lucas gets his chance to go back round Shields and O'Bannon and Force gets a shot as well. Lucas actually loses .03 from the first hit and Force just about duplicates her first hit. Bottom line is they remain #3 and #5 at the moment. Left Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.430/263.62, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.421/264.39, Was #6 Right Lane: Johnny Ahten Runs 5.574/252.52, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.478/259.11, Was #10 No help for either driver in this pair. Demke just about duplicates but Ahten loses a tenth. Left Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 5.298/260.91, Now #1; Best prior run: 8.994/91.88, Was #16 Right Lane: Garrett Bateman Runs 5.423/259.06, Now #8; Best prior run: 9.013/105.69, Was #17 Amazing! Massey actually had one or more holes out on the right side of the motor from after half track to the finish. I guess that shows in the speed being a bit down for a run like that. Pretty good way to get off the bump. Bateman actually bumped in on that run and put Swearingen out of the show. Left Lane: Frank Dischbein Runs 5.877/216.58, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.055/230.49, Was #15 Right Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.412/263.36, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.502/263.00, Was #13 Dischbein picks up almost two tenths but remains #15. Federlin goes top half by picking up almost a tenth. Left Lane: Dennis Swearingen Runs 6.373/164.25, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.948/142.12, Was #17 Right Lane: Larry Miersch No Time, Now #22; No Prior Run Miersch breaks on the burnout and is pushed away by his crew. Swearingen has holes out all the way down and finally clicked it at about 1000 feet. Left Lane: Mike Austin No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 12.206/64.10, Was #18 For some reason Austin is pushed away and will not make the session either. He's down to the final shot at around noon on Saturday.
