HEBRON, Ohio - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA, Second annual Jeg's Northern SPORTSnationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, amount over/under index, and position in order following run, class and class index:

Left Lane: Vinny Barone Runs 7.930/169.83/-0.550, Now #1 A/SR Index: 8.48
Right Lane: Frank Affronti Runs 7.670/176.42/-0.330, Now #2 C/A Index: 8.00

6:54 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 79 percent, barometer 29.24 inches, adjusted altitude 2,385 feet, track temperature 95 degrees. After a wet start to the day, the weather played with us the rest of the afternoon, but there was no serious rain and everybody got one shot today.

Affronti's car did a dance on the launch and still went way under his apparent index. However, Affronti's class came up as E/Altered, but he was really in C/Altered - a difference of 0.4 seconds in the index.

Peto's altered left a trail of death smoke in the lights.

Rose slowed early in the run.

Right Lane: Brian Browell Runs 7.410/178.12/-0.410, Now #3 D/D Index: 7.82

Massel got the turbo car wound up and hauling right from the start.

Butner had problems early.
