Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

GRAND BEND, Ont. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Torco Racing Fuels Top Fuel at the 2006 eMax Drag Racing Series, Mopar Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Kevin Jones Runs 5.117/233.76, Now #1

6:39 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 50 percent, barometer 29.49 inches, adjusted altitude 1,434 feet, track temperature 81 degrees.

Jones, in Doc Sipple's dragster, Opened with a 1,000-foot run, the blower belt breaking at that point.

Left Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 5.864/154.98, Now #3
Right Lane: Bobby Lagana Jr. Runs 5.021/233.52, Now #1

Zizzo was on a good run to half track, then there was a flash of flame from the top of the engine and the pipes "went wet." Lagana was on an okay run, losing ground to Zizzo but on a 4.80 pace. Then he, too, lost the blower belt and coasted across the line. He was quick enough for the early #1 spot, but the track records here are Clay Millican's 4.615 and 318.92, so Lagana's time at the top will be brief..

Left Lane: Mitch King No Time, Now #4

King popped the supercharger as soon as he hit the throttle and quickly pulled over to the side of the track, stopping about 100 feet out. There was a crack in the supercharger case wide enough to be visible from the tower.

Left Lane: Louie Allison Runs 4.784/295.08, Now #1
Right Lane: Rick Cooper Runs 8.467/93.77, Now #5

The cleanup was quick, King's quick reaction limiting the damage to the first 100 feet of the left lane. Cooper's car lost traction about 300 feet out and his car moved way over next to the wall, still leaving a pair of black tire tracks most of the way down the track. Meanwhile, Allison made a nice, clean, straight, early-shutoff run to take over the top spot with ease.

Left Lane: Bruce Litton No Time, Now #8

Litton's car would not go into reverse after the burnout, so he slowly motored down the track and off the top end.

Left Lane: Doug Foley Runs 10.134/89.80, Now #7
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.668/320.97, Now #1

This was the final pair of cars for today, the band "Blue Rodeo" ready to produce sounds of a different variety once they cleared the track.

Foley lost traction before going 300 feet, but Millican made a pretty pass after quickly pedaling early in the run to get out of tire shake, hurting his elapsed time a bit, but resetting the track speed record. His love affair with Grand Bend looks like it's still alive.

There are eleven cars on the grounds - nine made attempts in this session, with Todd Paton and Chris Karamesines electing to wait for tomorrow to make their qualifying attempts.
