Pro Modified Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Larry Sullivan

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 36th annual MAC Tools NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 7.141/192.51, Now #5; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Glen Kerunsky No Time, Now #20; No Prior Run

2:18 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees, relative humidity 43 percent, barometer 29.95 inches, adjusted altitude 929 feet, track temperature 99 degrees.

Other than Quain Stott's run during last night's icebox qualifying session, you can pretty much disregard prior runs. These two needed decent runs to secure a spot in the field. Kerunsky's car kept going left and he crossed the centerline, but missed the timing markers. Ray shook and pedaled, but his time may not hold up.

Left Lane: Roy Hill No Time, Now #22; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jim Halsey Runs 6.244/225.79, Now #2; No Prior Run

Hill's Mustang got "wacky", fishtailing and scraping the wall, DQ'ing the run. However, since he left before the tree was activated, there was no time to disqualify. Halsey made a nice run, right down the groove, and that time should keep him in the sixteen-car field for eliminations this evening.

Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.093/234.61, Now #1; Best prior run: 23.247/29.55, Was #20
Right Lane: Zach Barklage Runs 6.859/222.71, Now #6; Best prior run: 12.889/60.95, Was #18

Jimmy Rector is doing the tuning chores on Hoover's car this year. Barklage launched into shake, fishtailed a bit, and pedaled to get through it. Meanwhile, Hoover made an excellent run, well below the AMS Series elapsed time record (6.169) and well above the AMS Series speed record (231.91).

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.564/172.28, Now #6; Best prior run: 16.051/70.29, Was #20
Right Lane: Joshua Hernandez Runs 6.198/228.89, Now #3; Best prior run: 10.277/84.19, Was #16

Hernandez made a nice pass, right down the groove - his car was half of the synchronized Pro Mod crash sequence at Houston Raceway Park earlier this year. Coughlin's car looked like it was on a decent pass, but he was well off the quick pace.

Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 7.443/131.40, Now #14; Best prior run: 12.875/75.64, Was #20
Right Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.914/206.37, Now #9; Best prior run: 10.080/113.25, Was #17

Both cars shook, both drivers pedaled. Castellana gave it up, Patterson got back in it and stayed on the throttle.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 6.116/233.28, Now #2; Best prior run: 12.794/75.30, Was #20
Right Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.244/194.00, Now #6; Best prior run: 9.980/149.05, Was #18

Payne went right down the groove and into the second spot. janis did a great job of driving, his car headed for the 1,000-foot timing reflectors and Janis lifting just enough to get the front wheels down and steer away, then back on the throttle for a relatively strong finish. He was quicker and faster than Payne to half track, but the down-track maneuver slowed him down.

Left Lane: Chip King Runs 15.284/60.16, Now #20; Best prior run: 12.177/68.55, Was #20
Right Lane: Shelly Payne Runs 6.292/216.39, Now #7; Best prior run: 8.856/102.12, Was #19

King launched and shook, then lifted. Shelly went right down the track, the car a bit on the loose side, and she posted the quickest and fastest time ever for a female driver in Pro Modified.

Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 6.176/230.06, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.825/167.53, Was #18
Right Lane: Eddie Ware Runs 7.427/171.91, Now #18; Best prior run: 8.138/154.95, Was #19

Ware's car got away from him and he clipped the half-track timing marker, DQ'ing the run. Ashley made a nice run, right down the groove - hey, he was the #1 guy last year, he should be making that kind of run!

Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 10.220/89.67, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.662/222.77, Was #11
Right Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 6.317/223.38, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.334/136.01, Was #17

Critchley launched into shake and slowed. Kuhns made a nice run, right down the groove.

Left Lane: Doug Palmer Runs 6.244/227.73, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.548/157.59, Was #10
Right Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 6.229/222.33, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.207/146.86, Was #17

Two good runs, Palmer quicker in the first half of the run and Stivers on the top end.

Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 14.435/59.33, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.135/231.54, Was #3
Right Lane: Cody Barklage Runs 6.255/200.49, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.063/157.34, Was #16

Stott shook and lifted. Barklage drove a crooked path to the finish line, but never lifted. That's it, Thomas Patterson anchors the sixteen-car field at 6.914 and Ed Hoover leads the way at 6.093. They will be back later this afternoon for the first round of eliminations.
