Pro Modified Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 36th annual MAC Tools NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Eddie Ware Runs 8.138/154.95, Now #2
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.135/231.54, Now #1

8:28 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 60 degrees, relative humidity 51 percent, barometer 29.94 inches, adjusted altitude 152 feet, track temperature 54 degrees.

Ware shook, pedaled, and cruised through. Stott made a good run, the car a bit loose (but aren't Pro Mods always that way?)

Left Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 7.207/146.86, Now #2
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 10.999/84.53, Now #4

Ray's car shook and headed for the centerline, so he lofted. Stivers was all over the lane, finally giving it up.

Left Lane: Shelly Payne Runs 8.856/102.12, Now #5
Right Lane: Doug Palmer Runs 6.548/157.59, Now #2

This will be the first time Shelly has competed in anything other than a dragster, having started in Top Alcohol, then moving on to Top Fuel. Now she is in a suspended doorslammer, the driver sitting on the left side of the car. Her car was very loose in the middle of the run and she lifted. Palmer's car started to move around a lot on the top end and he saved it with the parachute.

Left Lane: Glen Kerunsky Runs 6.892/159.43, Now #3
Right Lane: Roy Hill No Time, Now #8

Hill left before the tree was activated. Kerunsky got way over next to the centerline, then brought it back.

Left Lane: Joshua Hernandez Runs 10.277/84.19, Now #7
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 16.051/70.29, Now #9

Hernandez shook, pedaled, and shook again. Coughlin shook and gave it up.

Left Lane: Cody Barklage Runs 7.063/157.34, Now #5
Right Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.662/222.77, Now #3

Zach's "little brother" made his Pro Mod debut on this run. Critchley was on and off the throttle a couple times on this run. Barklage's car was a bit on the loose side, even by Pro Mod standards.

Left Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 7.334/136.01, Now #7
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 12.794/75.30, Now #12

The Paynes have a pair of new "Stratii" this year. Jay's car made a hard left on the launch and he had to lift. Kuhns stayed with a wayward race way past the point where everyone watching was screaming, "LIFT!!" before doing so.

Left Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 10.080/113.25, Now #10
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 12.177/68.55, Now #13

Both cars shook violently.

Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 23.247/29.55, Now #16

Hoover lost traction immediately.

Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 9.980/149.05, Now #10
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 12.875/75.64, Now #16

Instant tire spin for both drivers.

Left Lane: Zach Barklage Runs 12.889/60.95, Now #18
Right Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 7.825/167.53, Now #8

Last pair. Barklage shook so hard his chute was out before he wnet 100 feet. Ashley was all over the lane, pedaling several times to complete the run.

That brings a painful round to a close. Tomorrow's mid-day session should be a lot better.
