GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 36th annual MAC Tools NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Right Lane: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 6.773/203.98, Now #15; No Prior Run 6:25 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 58 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 29.89 inches, adjusted altitude 115 feet, track temperature 54 degrees. Humphrey had a good run in the first round, but failed fuel check. This was a good
run, but a big "wiggle" about 200 feet out hurt his elapsed time. Left Lane: Ben Watson No Time, Now #28; Best prior run: 22.114/35.32, Was #28 Right Lane: Kevin Lawrence No Time, Now #29; No Prior Run Lawrence's car died on the burnout last round, Watson's lost traction immediately. This time around, almost the same story - Lawrence staged, but then his car died again, slowly rolling about 60 feet, and Watson launched into violent tire shake, so hard that he lifted and the engine went silent. His car coasted about 1,000 feet down the track, failing to reach the finish line. Left Lane: Erica Enders Runs 7.313/152.95, Now #21; Best prior run: 13.085/83.49, Was #24 Right Lane: Josh King Runs 13.871/60.02, Now #26; Best prior run: 19.573/43.15, Was #27 King's car got so sideways that the door was visible from the tower. Enders' car spun the tires on the launch, posting a 1.057 60-foot time. Left Lane: Jim Cunningham Runs 7.398/187.81, Now #24; Best prior run: 8.462/115.60, Was #24 Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.683/207.03, Now #5; Best prior run: 17.774/56.18, Was #27 Huge run by Morgan, starting with a stunning 0.981 60-foot time and the third-best speed today. Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 13.721/61.78, Now #24; Best prior run: 7.342/144.00, Was #23 Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.714/206.51, Now #9; Best prior run: 13.314/63.92, Was #26 Pawuk shook and slowed, the car trying to cross the centerline near the Christmas tree. Nice run by Stanfield to bump Humphrey from the field. Dave Northrop is on the bump spot at 6.742. Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.877/169.10, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.255/148.00, Was #22 Right Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 6.977/173.91, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.984/154.08, Was #26 Rizzo's car was all over the lane, but didn't hit anything or cross the centerline. Line was ahead of Larry Morgan's beyond half track, then he slowed, the problem not visible from here. Left Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.731/205.33, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.094/160.39, Was #23 Right Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.761/205.15, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.064/151.56, Was #22 Whisnant bumped Northrop. Warren Johnson is on the bump spot at 6.742. Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 24.740/42.94, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.002/159.65, Was #23 Right Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.756/204.49, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.996/190.03, Was #22 Johnson shook and slowed immediately. Grant missed on a good run. Left Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 12.036/72.21, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.742/204.31, Was #17 Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.747/206.13, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.723/205.15, Was #11 Northrop was just bumped from the field one pair ago. He shook and slowed, so WJ is safe until tomorrow. Gaines made another good run, but failed to improve. Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.766/205.43, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.742/206.28, Was #16 Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.650/207.03, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.692/206.18, Was #8 WJ's car made a big move on the launch last round, then he gathered it up to run a career-best speed. WJ had another wiggle on the launch and it hurt the elapsed time. W-Edwards made a nice run and his earlier run backs that up as a national elapsed time record. The last driver to set a Pro Stock elapsed time record here was - Warren Johnson, in 1999, at 6.866 and 201.37. The first to do so was "Dyno Don" Nicholson, in March of 1973, a 9.01 at 158.50. Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.771/204.49, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.733/204.35, Was #15 Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.687/207.46, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.689/206.94, Was #8 Krisher made another nice run, just a couple thousandths better than his first today. Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 8.317/112.16, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.727/204.68, Was #13 Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.677/206.84, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.686/205.52, Was #7 Coughlin slowed before half track. Connolly made a nice run, improving enough to move one rung up the ladder. Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.744/205.29, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.726/204.96, Was #12 Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.702/206.80, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.671/207.13, Was #4 Both runs looked good early, but both lost ground to their earlier run on the top half. Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 13.892/61.16, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.723/206.23, Was #10 Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.670/207.08, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.660/206.28, Was #3 Smith shook and turned right on the launch, forcing him to lift. "Captain Chaos" made another great run with a career-best speed (well, he went faster in Top Fuel, but it's his best in Pro Stock). Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.677/205.80, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.672/205.76, Was #5 Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.633/208.23, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.649/207.32, Was #1 Anderson needed a 6.715 to back up his first run as a record. He upped the ante with the quickest and fastest run ever to establish the national elapsed time and speed records on this run. It looks like his heavy testing schedule since Phoenix is paying off! Nice run by Yates, too, a career-best speed for the second time today.
