NHRA POWERade Series Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher has been nominated for the prestigious Al Holbert Memorial Driver of the Year Award by the membership of the Eastern Motorsports Press Association (EMPA), it was announced today by association president Ernie Saxton.

Schumacher was nominated for the honor along with several drivers from other forms of auto racing, including Tony Stewart (NASCAR), Dan Wheldon (IRL), Steve Kinser (World of Outlaws), Sebastian Bourdais (Champ Car) and Clay Millican (IHRA).

Schumacher earned his second straight and third overall POWERade Series world championship with nine victories behind the wheel of his U.S. Army dragster. He set single-season NHRA Top Fuel records for consecutive victories (5), consecutive final rounds (7), No. 1 qualifiers (11), consecutive round wins (20) and overall margin of victory (415 points, over Larry Dixon). He set performance records for elapsed time (4.437 seconds) and speed (336.15 mph).

The winner will be announced Jan. 28 during the EMPA Hall of Fame dinner near Philadelphia.

Since its founding in 1969, EMPA has grown from a handful of members to become one of the largest motorsports media organizations in the nation, with more than 200 members. It is open to all members of the working motorsports press, including broadcast, Internet and print, covering all forms of motorsport events.
