Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 41st annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.731/205.57, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.730/205.10, Was #18
Right Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 6.901/201.88, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.850/201.94, Was #24

11:44 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 67 degrees, relative humidity 36 percent, barometer 29.36 inches, adjusted altitude 1,341 feet, track temperature 86 degrees.

Dave Howard is on the bump spot at 6.725. Air conditions are not quite as favorable as they were yesterday, so there probably won't be many changes in the qualified field.

Rivera's car spun the tires hard on the launch. Yates lost a thousandth from his best run and that is not good news for those not yet in the field.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.784/205.29, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.750/205.01, Was #22
Right Lane: Tony Rizzo No Time, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.850/201.94, Was #25

Rizzo made the burnout, then shut it off.

Left Lane: Max Naylor Runs 6.840/203.28, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.899/194.88, Was #26
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 12.675/69.66, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.731/205.82, Was #19

If anybody is going to bump into the field, it will be Krisher, who had a driveline failure on his first qualifying attempt and was briefly in the field yesterday. Naylor's car made a hard right turn and he had to lift briefly. Krisher shook hard with the wheels up, then turned left, and he threw in the towel.

Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.781/203.98, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.767/204.51, Was #23
Right Lane: Dave Howard Runs 6.770/205.38, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.725/205.16, Was #16

Grant's car went left, then right on the launch. Howard shook the tires.

Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.765/203.95, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.749/204.51, Was #21
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.731/205.54, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.717/205.63, Was #13

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.715/206.04, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.733/206.26, Was #20
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.768/204.39, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.716/204.42, Was #11

Gaines made his best run of the weekend and bumped Howard from the field. Now Tom Martino is on the bump spot at 6.724.

Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.753/205.57, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.727/205.85, Was #18
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 13.068/66.73, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.715/205.51, Was #11

Connolly shook hard and slowed. Stanfield failed to improve.

Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.718/205.69, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.724/206.13, Was #16
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.741/205.79, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.712/205.47, Was #9

Martino made a very nice run to move off the bump spot. Not very far, but it could be important in the second session today. Now Bob Panella is on the bump spot at 6.721.

Left Lane: Bob Panella Runs 6.748/204.45, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.721/205.57, Was #16
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.753/205.32, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.708/205.41, Was #8

No help here...

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.731/206.51, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.717/207.15, Was #13
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 11.260/79.82, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.707/205.60, Was #7

Stevens shook early and threw in the towel. WJ failed to improve and will probably go into eliminations in the bottom half of the field.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.705/206.16, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.704/205.79, Was #5
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.738/205.85, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.705/205.79, Was #6

Coughlin made a very impressive run, only a thousandth slower than his run yesterday and low for the round so far.

Left Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.681/206.70, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.683/206.70, Was #3
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.688/207.08, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.685/206.54, Was #4

Enders showed that her team is "ready to play with the big boys," running low ET of the round and improving over her best run yesterday, beating Anderson in a head-to-head matchup.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.728/206.83, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.683/207.62, Was #3
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.700/206.76, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.677/206.83, Was #1

Line and his crew did a good job of repairing the damage to the nose of his car, the damage not visible from a few feet away. But Enders and Anderson hang on to the two best runs of the round.

With one round of qualifying left, KJ is still #1 at 6.677 and Bob Panella is on the bump spot at 6.721.
