Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Final Session

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 41st annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: John Haley Runs 5.433/241.02, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.224/210.14, Was #23
Right Lane: Ben Harper Runs 5.658/243.59, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.612/254.23, Was #18

6:12 p.m. Haley gets out of the groove and drifts toward the center-line, but hangs on for a good run. He gets in the field in the 11th spot for now. Harper makes a clean pass but doesn't get in the show.

Left Lane: Carl Magee Runs 17.563/45.66, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.411/228.85, Was #9

Bowgren completes his burnout and the engine dies, not sure why. Magee hits the throttle, starts spinning the tires, then loses cylinders and clicks it off.

Left Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 10.686/74.63, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.430/258.67, Was #10
Right Lane: Eric Morris Runs 6.676/142.03, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.550/258.81, Was #18

Miersch went up in smoke about 100 feet out. Morris gets a little past half-track and bangs the blower.

Left Lane: Mike Austin Runs 5.390/264.86, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.455/263.46, Was #12
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.433/264.55, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.502/254.38, Was #14



Left Lane: Artie Allen Runs 5.537/252.05, Now #18; Best prior run: 20.386/61.71, Was #24
Right Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.419/260.66, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.518/252.80, Was #15

Allen finally makes a good run, right down the groove, but he doesn't make the show. Severance makes his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up to the 11th spot.

Left Lane: Hillary Will Runs 17.117/25.09, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.393/268.76, Was #8
Right Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.893/231.40, Now #22; Best prior run: 5.713/232.07, Was #22

Will shakes the tires right off the line and clicks it off. Hitchman was mixing up cylinders all the way through the run.

Left Lane: Dennis Swearingen Runs 5.753/235.60, Now #23; Best prior run: 5.764/240.34, Was #23
Right Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.553/262.90, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.398/265.53, Was #9

No help for either driver here.

Left Lane: Aaron Olivarez Runs 5.300/269.56, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.304/269.24, Was #3
Right Lane: Kevin Brown Runs 5.571/237.17, Now #20; Best prior run: 5.697/231.75, Was #21

Olivarez makes another great pass and stays in the third spot. Brown moves up a notch but doesn't get in the show.

Left Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 10.626/75.54, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.372/264.86, Was #6
Right Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 5.488/261.93, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.519/255.29, Was #16

Federlin rattles the tires, then gets out of shape and has to shut down early. Johnson makes a decent pass, improves a little, but stays on the bump.

Left Lane: Randy Eakins Runs 6.026/230.02, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.197/230.17, Was #24
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.319/270.86, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.289/271.13, Was #2

Eakins was losing cylinders all the way through the run. Reichert makes another good run and stays in the third spot.

Left Lane: Joe Windham Runs 20.973/44.74, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.307/269.51, Was #4
Right Lane: Ashley Force Runs 5.302/268.65, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.354/259.76, Was #5

Windham gets about 200 feet out and goes up in smoke. Force makes a her quickest pass of the weekend and swaps places with Windham on the ladder.

Left Lane: Bob Perkins Runs 5.552/254.42, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.456/257.33, Was #15

Perkins drifts to the left, then back to the right, then back in the middle. That ends qualifying for the dragsters, Steve Torrence is on the pole and Brandon Johnson is on the bump spot at 5.488.
