JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fifth annual Ameriquest Mortgage Route 66 NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Rick Cortino Runs 6.404/224.40, Now #2
Right Lane: Fred Hagen Runs 5.821/255.00, Now #1

Weather conditions: air temperature 66 degrees, relative humidity 26 percent, barometer 29.80 inches, adjusted altitude 738 feet, track temperature 93 degrees.

Hagen with a nice pass to open the weekend.


Left Lane: Larry Miner Runs 10.094/81.64, Now #4
Right Lane: David Kovar Runs 6.242/229.16, Now #2

Miner with problems early and clicked it off.

Left Lane: Bruce Carlson Runs 11.994/63.97, Now #6
Right Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 5.813/222.14, Now #1

Carlson with problems early and shuts it off.

Left Lane: Steve Franke Runs 6.370/224.81, Now #5
Right Lane: Mike Bell Runs 5.672/255.34, Now #1

Bell with a great looking pass to go to number one for now.

Left Lane: John Weaver Runs 9.978/83.53, Now #8
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 5.849/229.12, Now #4

Weaver with problems early in the run and clicked it off. Lee was out of the groove early, but stayed with it for a good pass.

Left Lane: Tate Branch Runs 5.803/249.53, Now #3
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.569/259.91, Now #1

Team owner George Etterman is at home recovering, hoping to get back with the team. Payne with a real nice pass to go to the number one spot.

Left Lane: Danny Townsend Runs 5.662/253.99, Now #2
Right Lane: Kirk Williams Runs 5.698/252.28, Now #4

A couple good looking passes here to go to top half of the field.

Left Lane: Mark Billington Runs 5.735/251.67, Now #5
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 7.918/128.84, Now #13



Left Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.786/254.62, Now #7
Right Lane: Cy Chesterman Runs 5.690/257.24, Now #4



Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.718/258.12, Now #7
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.613/253.47, Now #2

Manzo was loose and all over his lane, but stayed with it. Gordon with a great pass to go to the number two spot.

Left Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.599/256.02, Now #3
Right Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.583/258.86, Now #2

Snyder with a career best E.T. with a great looking pass. Newberry also right down the groove for a great looking pass.

Left Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.695/243.99, Now #8
Right Lane: Vern Moats Runs 6.035/253.75, Now #17

Moats starts to shake the tires and pedaled it at least one time. Taylor with a clean pass to get into the top half of the show.
