Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 21st annual Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.850/314.61, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.081/251.86, Was #19

12:52 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 65 percent, barometer 29.83 inches, adjusted altitude 1,313 feet, track temperature 105 degrees.

Capps took his car right down the groove with just a bit of tire shake to move up nine spots in the order and into the field.


Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 4.905/280.54, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.865/288.58, Was #13
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 5.044/229.55, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.217/213.27, Was #20

Lee got loss and smoked the tires at about 1,000 feet. He let the chutes out early. Gilbertson had some tire shake but drove through it. He was not as quick as yesterday, so he did not change his spot in the order.

Left Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.852/310.48, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.865/311.56, Was #12
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 4.834/316.90, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.912/299.66, Was #15

Bartone had his quickest pass so far to move up six spots in the order. Burkart had a nice run that was his quickest so far, but it was not quick enough to change where he is in the qualifying order.

Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 7.497/110.46, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.864/318.39, Was #13
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.993/278.52, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.943/315.93, Was #18

Ashley got to about 330 feet when he started to get loose. At about mid track, the back end of his car swung around hard, so he had to back off the throttle and click it off. Head was not as quick as he was yesterday and is still not in the field.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 9.909/82.05, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.836/317.94, Was #10
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.952/295.46, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.929/303.30, Was #17

Hight shook the tires when he launched, then started smoking them. he shut it down by the time he reached 330 feet. Densham was not as quick as he was in the second session yesterday.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.855/308.14, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.829/317.94, Was #8
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.186/285.35, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.927/312.13, Was #16

Pedregon drifted out of the groove as soon as he launched. Worsham's run looked okay but was not as quick as yesterday.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 5.145/218.58, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.804/322.11, Was #5
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.584/179.40, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.887/313.58, Was #15

Both drivers made it to mid track when their cars started trailing smoke. Both clicked off early.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 7.541/111.95, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.801/318.84, Was #4
Right Lane: Eric Medlen Runs 7.453/113.21, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.827/314.24, Was #7

Both drivers started smoking their tires at the 330-foot marker and both shut their cars down by the time they reached mid track.

Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.985/258.62, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.813/320.13, Was #6

Bazemore made it to 1,000 feet when his car started trailing smoke. He got off the throttle early.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 9.548/87.23, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.794/324.59, Was #2
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.817/316.90, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.766/322.11, Was #1

Johnson shook the tires as soon as he launched and shut it down. Scelzi had a good run but was not as quick as last night. He'll stay in the number one spot.
