Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #2

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 21st annual Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Wayne Morris Runs 6.721/243.02, Now #17; Best prior run: 12.752/62.83, Was #17
Right Lane: Dave DeAngelis Runs 5.595/257.19, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.605/257.53, Was #10

5:10 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 87 degrees, relative humidity 39 percent, barometer 29.88 inches, adjusted altitude 2,147 feet, track temperature 117 degrees.

Morris shook the rear tires hard when he launched. He got off the throttle and coasted to the 330-foot marker and then got back on the throttle. DeAngelis had some tire shake but drove through it. He was quicker than his first session time but not quick enough to change his place in the order.

Ashley Force is on the bump spot at 5.817.


Left Lane: Mark Albert Runs 5.541/253.90, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.543/253.33, Was #6
Right Lane: Donald Gianquitto Runs 11.206/85.34, Now #18; No Prior Run

Gianquitto did not make a qualifying pass in the first session. The car launched and lumbered down the track, with fuel shooting out the header pipes. Albert had a good pass but did not change hi place in the order.

Left Lane: Jeff Veale Runs 5.527/253.52, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.574/249.53, Was #9
Right Lane: Mike Kosky Runs 5.525/255.39, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.549/251.63, Was #7

Both drivers moved up with a pair of nice runs down the track. Veale moved up three spots, Kosky moved up two spots.

Left Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.497/258.96, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.556/258.27, Was #9
Right Lane: Dan Mercier Runs 5.629/263.26, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.538/264.91, Was #7

Federlin took his car right down the groove and moved up four spots in the order. In doing so, he pushed Mercier down one spot.

Left Lane: Arthur Gallant Runs 5.591/256.31, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.336/258.52, Was #2
Right Lane: Karen Benkovich Runs 5.687/247.66, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.645/247.43, Was #12

Neither driver was quicker than they were in the first session and they stayed where they were in the running order.

Left Lane: Richard Bourke Runs 5.540/254.09, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.675/250.83, Was #13
Right Lane: Sheila Kopchick No Time, Now #19; No Prior Run

Kopchick (nee Tafur) launched and her car shut down right away. She came to a stop about 400 feet down the track.She did not make a qualifying attempt in the first session. Bourke had a good pass to move up four spots in the order.

Left Lane: Bruce Horner No Time, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.782/246.17, Was #15
Right Lane: Ashley Force Runs 5.715/247.29, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.817/242.67, Was #16

Force was on the bubble when she staged for this run. Horner was not able to get his car started. Force moved up two spots in the order with this pass.

Left Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.598/258.37, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.331/270.05, Was #1
Right Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.495/253.33, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.408/264.44, Was #3

Both drivers had nice-looking runs but neither improved his spot in the order.

Left Lane: Jeff Bohr Runs 5.544/254.23, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.469/259.76, Was #4
Right Lane: Rich McPhillips Runs 8.923/93.62, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.639/256.31, Was #12

McPhillips launched and shook the tires, so he shut it down. Bohr had a little tire shake but drove through it.
