Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #1

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 21st annual Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Doug Foley Runs 4.727/306.95, Now #1
Right Lane: Luigi Novelli Runs 4.953/237.96, Now #2

Weather conditions: air temperature 87 degrees, relative humidity 39 percent, barometer 29.88 inches, adjusted altitude 2,147 feet, track temperature 117 degrees.

Foley making his NHRA Top Fuel debut. He Foley with a great looking pass. Doug Foley's incremental times: 60ft-0.888 sec., 330ft-2.235, 660ft-3.198/260.91mph, 1,000ft-4.013 Novelli with a good looking pass until around 1000 feet when he had a big puff of smoke.


Left Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 4.859/289.94, Now #2
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 9.427/83.15, Now #4

Troxel started losing traction and then started dropping cylinders. It looked like Zizzo was trailing fuel all the way down track from half track on.

Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.793/264.08, Now #2

Millican with a nice looking pass until around 1100 feet when something went away and he slowed down.

Left Lane: David Baca Runs 4.874/245.81, Now #4
Right Lane: John Smith Runs 6.093/155.15, Now #6

Smith lost traction early and clicked it off. Baca with nice pass until right before the finish line when he slowed.

Left Lane: Scott Weis Runs 9.596/84.44, Now #9
Right Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 4.657/318.09, Now #1

Weis was up in smoke by 150 feet and shut it off. Kalitta with a nice clean pass straight down the groove. The Kalitta team keep it hooked up and hitting on all eight all the way through the quarter mile.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.676/297.81, Now #3
Right Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.621/318.17, Now #1

Cory Mac with a good looking pass until just before the finish line when it looked like the engine was going away. Then when he let off the throttle there was a big puff of smoke. Herbert with a great looking pass straight down the groove to the number one spot.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.563/322.11, Now #1
Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 4.611/325.53, Now #2

Lucas with a great pass to got to number one. Morgan Lucas' incremental times: 60ft-0.844 sec., 330ft-2.163, 660ft-3.093/272.17mph, 1,000ft-3.878

Bernstein with a good looking pass, also. Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.867 sec., 330ft-2.199, 660ft-3.136/269.46mph, 1,000ft-3.928

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 4.648/313.95, Now #5
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.592/324.90, Now #2

Grubnic was hazing the tires on the top end, but still with a good looking pass. Dixon with with a great looking pass with no problems.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.625/315.86, Now #6
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.595/287.47, Now #3

Schumacher's pass looked really good until just before the finish line when it started having problems. Kalitta was a little loose around 1000 feet, but stayed with it.
