Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 21st annual Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Ross Stickler Runs 5.979/235.15, Now #1
Right Lane: Sam Leland Runs 7.687/124.63, Now #2

11:56 a.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 56 percent, barometer 29.92 inches, adjusted altitude 1,541 feet, track temperature 105 degrees.

Leland drifted out of the groove at mid track and slowed the rest of the way down the track. Stickler took his car down the middle of the lane.


Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.900/242.50, Now #1
Right Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 6.500/160.65, Now #3

Tasca's Mustang went right down the groove. Gibson drifted right and out of the groove at mid track.

Left Lane: Eric Lourie Runs 5.909/240.12, Now #2
Right Lane: Ron Zavarella Runs 6.025/235.80, Now #4

Both cars went right down the groove.

Left Lane: Jeff McCulloch Runs 6.324/197.05, Now #6
Right Lane: Duane Beers Runs 6.069/237.13, Now #5

Beer got to mid track and then started to drift out of the groove toward the centerline. McCulloch's run looked clean but was not as quick as it looked.

Left Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.820/247.66, Now #1
Right Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 6.241/179.25, Now #7

Ferro's car blew the burst panel at 1,000 feet. Harker took his car down the middle of his lane to move into the top of the order for now.

Left Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 5.861/243.77, Now #2
Right Lane: Mark Billington Runs 7.283/119.40, Now #11

Billington drifted in and out of the groove. Martin got a little loose but stayed with it to finish the run.

Left Lane: David Ray Runs 5.754/249.16, Now #1
Right Lane: Bruce Mullins Runs 5.922/241.80, Now #6

Ray moved into the top spot in the order with a nice pass down the groove. Mullins shook the tires a bit at the start but settled in to finish the run.

Left Lane: Dan Pomponio Runs 6.002/238.81, Now #9
Right Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 5.971/238.38, Now #7

Burnett drifted right when he launched but got the car back into the groove to finish out the run. Pomponio shook the tires when he launched but drove through it.

Left Lane: DJ Cox Jr Runs 6.066/231.32, Now #12
Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.666/255.58, Now #1

Manzo moved to the top of the order for now with a nice run down the middle of his lane. Cox had a clean run, with a little bit of tire shake, but did not run at the same pace.

Left Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.789/250.32, Now #3

Another nice run down the track, but Newberry was nor as quick as Manzo and is in the number three spot for now.
