Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Larry Sullivan

CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from final, round 5 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 51st annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Larry Peternel Runs 6.974/196.79, Now #33; Best prior run: 7.119/188.89, Was #33
Right Lane: Bill Shorts Runs 7.110/193.05, Now #34; Best prior run: 7.126/193.24, Was #34

3:37 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 35 percent, barometer 29.50 inches, adjusted altitude 1,941 feet, track temperature 119 degrees.

We just finished a round of Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying with absolutely no position changes and it is likely we'll see the same thing in this final qualifying session for Pro Stock. Erica Enders is on the bump spot at 6.758 and probably hopes that is the case.

Shorts made his best run of the weekend, stayed dead last. Peternel got into the sixes for the first time this weekend, also stayed right where he was in the order.

Left Lane: Jerry Hemmingson Runs 6.963/199.14, Now #32; Best prior run: 6.939/198.99, Was #32
Right Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 6.920/200.98, Now #31; Best prior run: 6.922/201.01, Was #31

Left Lane: John Mahoney Runs 6.947/199.05, Now #30; Best prior run: 6.897/199.70, Was #30
Right Lane: Pat Herold Runs 7.265/196.24, Now #29; Best prior run: 6.896/199.73, Was #29

Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.815/202.12, Now #27; Best prior run: 6.838/201.13, Was #27
Right Lane: Mike Trumble Jr Runs 6.892/200.83, Now #28; Best prior run: 6.862/201.19, Was #28

Grant fired, started to move forward, and there were loud POPs from under the hood. He stopped, signaled the crew to take a look. They took the hood off, fixed whatever it was, and he managed to make starter Rick Stewart mad by making a late, full burnout across the line. But he was allowed to stage and made his best pass of the weekend - still a DNQ, however.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.795/203.61, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.809/203.43, Was #26
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.824/201.73, Now #26; Best prior run: 6.802/202.03, Was #25

Krisher was one of the drivers with a shot at improving enough to make the field, but a 1.019 60-foot time signaled failure. he improved, but only to 24th.

Left Lane: Kevin Lawrence Runs 6.859/201.97, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.799/202.76, Was #25
Right Lane: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 6.833/202.85, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.787/203.40, Was #23

Humphrey's car left some fluid on the launch pad when he made his burnout and his crew and the starting line crew scurried to get it wiped up before he backed up. The launch pad was fine, but Humphrey's car was not up to the task.

Left Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.823/203.37, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.770/203.86, Was #21
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 13.638/60.05, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.778/202.94, Was #22

"Kaptain Kaos" was unable to conquer the new car blues, getting up on the tires and shaking on this attempt.

Right Lane: Bob Panella Runs 6.793/202.85, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.764/203.55, Was #20

Mike Edwards was scheduled to run beside Panella, but threw a rod in the fourth round and was unable to make it for this session.

Left Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.746/204.01, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.758/204.14, Was #16
Right Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 6.799/202.82, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.762/203.06, Was #19

The number of cars with a shot at bumping Enders from the field keeps getting smaller, but they also keep getting more and more capable of doing so. By the way, Northrop's car is the car Kenny Koretsky took to the finals here last year.

Wow! Enders not only survived the challenge, she moved way up the ladder in the heat of the afternoon, starting with a 0.998 60-foot time. Bruce Allen is now on the bump spot at 6.757.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.780/203.46, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.757/203.74, Was #16
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.769/203.98, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.758/204.11, Was #17

Nope, neither driver improved and the field is set - they may shuffle a couple spots, but the sixteen participants are known.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.768/203.49, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.755/204.32, Was #15
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.778/203.43, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.752/203.71, Was #14

No help for the two Ohio drivers.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.792/202.55, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.748/203.46, Was #12
Right Lane: Dave Howard Runs 6.793/203.00, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.751/203.86, Was #13

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.777/203.68, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.748/203.83, Was #11
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.790/203.95, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.737/203.92, Was #8

Two more, no change, Enders remains quickest of the session.

Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.743/204.17, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.746/203.40, Was #10
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.781/203.25, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.737/204.70, Was #7

Connolly took low ET of the round away from Enders on a nice pass, moved around her into ninth.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.778/203.80, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.736/204.20, Was #6
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.782/203.25, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.735/204.51, Was #5

Both had 1.00 60-foot times, well off their earlier pace.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.764/205.07, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.727/205.66, Was #2
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.775/204.32, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.730/204.94, Was #4

The runs by Connolly and Endes are looking pretty good - but the next pair will probably raise the bar.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.704/205.69, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.689/205.51, Was #1
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.770/204.57, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.728/205.35, Was #3

KJ's car fishtailed off the line, his 60-foot time ballooning to a 1.009, but Anderson once again established his presence, taking low ET of the session by 0.04 seconds, an eternity in Pro Stock.

Qualifying is finished, Greg Anderson leads the field at 6.689, Bruce Allen is on the bump spot at 6.757, and Erica Enders is the first woman to qualify in Pro Stock at Indy since Shirley Shahan qualified 31st in a 32-car field in 1971.
