Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Darryl Jackman

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 40th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.793/204.63, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.744/205.26, Was #7

11:35 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 62 degrees, relative humidity 64 percent, barometer 28.89 inches, adjusted altitude 1,664 feet, track temperature 68 degrees.

The session opens with Koretsky taking a solo lap in the right lane. Koretsky just might have left a little on the table here. A soft 1.016 short time translates to a nickel slower that his first run.

Left Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 6.842/198.58, Now #26; Best prior run: 6.888/195.14, Was #27
Right Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 6.853/202.94, Now #27; Best prior run: 6.854/202.21, Was #26

Both drivers are outside the field, and after the run they remain that way. All the pair managed to do was swap places.

Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.812/201.40, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.834/201.61, Was #25
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.800/203.43, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.787/203.80, Was #19

Cuadra is holding onto the bump for all he's worth with his 6.777. This pair isn't close and will need that last hit of the weekend.

Left Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.778/203.31, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.770/204.11, Was #12
Right Lane: Bob Panella Runs 6.844/203.12, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.814/203.06, Was #24

This difference between #12 and #16 is .007 at this moment. Haas remains #12 and Panella is still searching for a setup to get him close.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.797/203.16, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.818/203.68, Was #25
Right Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 6.812/203.19, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.808/202.21, Was #22

Geoffrion gets the other Ford closer but still can't crack the bump. Rivera is down to an afternoon shot as well.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.790/202.39, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.803/202.27, Was #22
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.795/203.46, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.776/203.46, Was #14

Watson is off .02 from his weekend best and that's an eternity in Pro Stock. Pawuk is still searching for a starting spot in his last race for Summit.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.772/203.92, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.766/204.08, Was #11
Right Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.778/203.86, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.781/203.43, Was #18

KJ is fairly solid in the show, and that's good since he drops just a bit from his weekend best. Whisnant is ever so close but Cuadra still has a grip on the bump.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 10.064/90.37, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.793/203.58, Was #21
Right Lane: Fernando Cuadra Runs 6.753/205.26, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.777/204.20, Was #16

WJ gets loose and all he can do is coast on out. Cuadra gets off the bump and out of that traffic jam real well. He's now #10 and breathing again.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.755/205.13, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.781/204.82, Was #18
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.756/204.91, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.776/203.43, Was #16

We have a new bump spot after this pair and it's Allen Johnson at 6.774. Jeg's in the show at #12 and Bruce Allen turned over the bump to Johnson.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.750/204.11, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.739/204.17, Was #5
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 9.406/101.65, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.774/203.09, Was #16

Johnson stays on the bump and Krisher gets no help.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.742/204.29, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.753/203.92, Was #11
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.785/205.04, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.744/205.35, Was #6

Smith adds his name to the list of social climbers for the session as he goes into the top side of the field. Connolly falls way off from his weekend best and falls one spot to #7.

Left Lane: Steve Johns Runs 6.720/205.16, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.751/204.17, Was #10
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.745/204.39, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.728/204.76, Was #3

Johns goes the opposite way of Connolly and jumps into the #2 spot. Edwards loses the .02 that Johns found and falls to #4.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.715/204.82, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.729/204.82, Was #5
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.738/206.16, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.725/205.22, Was #3

Line picks up slightly and goes to the spot behind Anderson. Morgan falls off a tiny bit and is now #4.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.741/204.66, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.751/204.76, Was #10
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.720/205.72, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.713/205.10, Was #1

Anderson did the bunny hop off the starting line and it cost him in the ET department. Yesterday he predicted someone would be in the '.60s today but it's not going to happen in this session. Gaines picks up exactly .01 and that moves him up three positions to #7. That's all for Pro Stock and we move on the the Fuel Altereds. The bad news from that camp was the 'The Wing' blackened the crank yesterday and hasn't been able to put the engine back together yet. 'The Rat Trap' kind of bounced the car off the wall after the finish yesterday and he didn't make an appearance today either. Nanook was on and off the pedal and runs 6.489/217.77. Bradford was really loose and carded a shutoff 9.261/158.15.
