POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 40th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run: Left Lane: Hillary Will Runs 5.691/253.09, Now #1 Right Lane: Marshall Topping Runs 6.102/244.65, Now #2 12:35 p.m. Will took the long way down and used up a lot of the left lane. Topping way down on power. Left Lane: Dennis Swearingen Runs 6.474/146.13, Now #3 Right Lane: Danny Valadez Runs 10.776/81.99, Now #4 Valadez got the car completely sideways at about 300 feet. He lifted and managed to stay in his own lane. Swearingen was way down on power and had holes out on both banks. Left Lane: Mitch Myers Runs 10.175/77.74, Now #5 Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.332/272.17, Now #1 Myers kicked the tires loose after carding a .907 60 footer. Reichert has no problems and goes to the head of the class. Left Lane: Ben Harper Runs 5.406/266.37, Now #2 Right Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 12.160/82.30, Now #8 Hitchman spins the tires hard and winds up in smoke before 60 feet. Harper gets a nice pass on the qualifying sheet and winds up #2. Left Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 5.767/212.16, Now #5 Right Lane: David Wells Runs 5.526/260.97, Now #3 Lots of raw fuel out of both banks on Miersch's car tells the story there. Wells shook pretty hard at the hit but gets something to tune from. Left Lane: Johnny Ahten No Time, Now #12 Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.499/256.16, Now #3 Ahten makes the burnout and then the crew pushes him away from the line. Shields makes a pretty good lap in the right lane but still left something on the table. Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 5.254/272.28, Now #1 Right Lane: Chris Demke No Time, Now #14 We have another racer fall by the wayside even before the run. Demke is pushed away after the burnout. Lucas just sets low ET and top speed for the class. Left Lane: Ashley Force Runs 5.260/270.86, Now #2 Right Lane: Kent Nuckols Runs 5.992/247.11, Now #9 Tough luck for Nuckols. He makes a so so run and follows it up but not being able to stop the car before the end of the track. He's in the dirt but I can't see how much damage might have been done to the car from here. The TV it not on yet so we don't know exactly what happened. Force just misses the top spot as she falls .01 short of Lucas. Left Lane: Gene Snow Runs 5.292/263.36, Now #3 Right Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 5.581/251.67, Now #8 Mr. Snow is a player this weekend. He moves in the #3 spot. Hirata had lots of smoke from the tires at the hit and the engine on the top end. He still makes the top half of the show to this point. According to one sheet we have 24 dragsters on the grounds this weekend. Left Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.508/259.01, Now #7 Right Lane: Randy Meyer Runs 11.326/97.90, Now #17 Federlin had a .935 sixty foot number but from there on the car seemed a bit soft. That seems harsh but that 5.50 isn't going to stay in the top half and the bump could be close if the weather stays good. Meyer was up in smoke from the instant he stepped on the pedal. Left Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.558/248.48, Now #9 Right Lane: John Haley Runs 11.759/57.59, Now #19 Haley zinged the motor pretty hard at about 100 feet and shut it down. Hudson got a baseline number to tune from. Left Lane: Robert Perkins Runs 5.413/259.26, Now #6 Perkins sets his career best ET here and goes all the way to the six spot. He's the last car of the dragster session and the funnies are on the pad.
