POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 40th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, amount over/under index, and position in order following run, class and class index:

Left Lane: Bryan Morrison Runs 8.859/-0.431, Now #2 C/SMA Index: 9.29
Right Lane: Ed Sigmon Runs 8.674/-0.586, Now #1 C/SR Index: 9.26

1:58 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 63 degrees, relative humidity 69 percent, barometer 29.08 inches, adjusted altitude 1,470 feet, track temperature 82 degrees.

Hodges got as far as the head of the staging lanes, but was unable to get it fired. Kaplan made a very strong run, his speed 194.52 mph.
