JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Rick Cortino Runs 7.253/139.56, Now #2
Right Lane: Mike Bell Runs 5.861/244.25, Now #1

Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 56 percent, barometer 29.32 inches, adjusted altitude 1,556 feet, track temperature 80 degrees.

Bell is out of the groove, but stays with it for a good pass in this opening round. Cortino loses power early in the run.

Left Lane: David Kovar Runs 6.127/230.88, Now #3
Right Lane: Marc White Runs 5.635/255.92, Now #1

White gets out of the groove early and close to the wall, but reels it in for great looking pass. Kovar with a good looking pass.

Left Lane: Kris Hool Runs 5.794/251.53, Now #2
Right Lane: Jackie Stidham Runs 9.300/93.56, Now #6

Stidham shook and clicked it off. Hool with the quickest and fastest of his career to go to the number two spot.

Left Lane: Kirk Williams Runs 6.196/244.96, Now #6
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 5.809/252.10, Now #3

Lee with a nice looking pass to start the weekend.

Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.735/248.93, Now #2
Right Lane: Shawn Jones Runs 5.847/248.80, Now #5

Moats launched hard and keep it hooked up all the way down the 1320. Shawn Jones was straight down Broadway.

Left Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.680/253.42, Now #2
Right Lane: Tate Branch Runs 5.696/255.15, Now #3

This was a great looking side-by-side drag race here, both right down the groove.

Left Lane: Chuck Cheeseman Runs 5.808/246.08, Now #6
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 6.953/104.75, Now #12

Gordon shut off early. Cheeseman with a nice looking pass.

Left Lane: Bucky Austin Runs 5.655/258.71, Now #2
Right Lane: Bruce Carlson Runs 6.539/216.69, Now #13

Austin with a good clean pass to slid into the number two spot.

Left Lane: Cy Chesterman Runs 5.671/252.33, Now #3
Right Lane: John Patton Runs 9.596/89.77, Now #18

Chesterman with a good looking pass to start the weekend. Patton with trouble early and clicks it off.

Left Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.647/254.52, Now #2
Right Lane: Danny Townsend Runs 5.670/255.97, Now #4

Townsend with a career best E.T. and mph pass here. Newberry with great looking pass here.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.847/249.49, Now #12
Right Lane: Jay Payne No Time, Now #22

Payne with a lot of tire shake right off the starting line and gets out of the groove and tags the wall, so this run will be DQ'ed.
