By Rick Green

JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.965/288.27, Now #13; Best prior run: 11.113/81.58, Was #24
Right Lane: Cory Lee Runs 5.124/256.21, Now #17; Best prior run: 10.108/81.51, Was #22

Lee launched hard and then started mixing up cylinders on the top end and then the engine let go with a big fireball. He finally gets it to a stop and is out of the car and he is fine. Bode uses up an engine right in the lights, but gets in the show for now.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.747/198.64, Now #20; Best prior run: 10.936/82.93, Was #24
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 6.043/142.93, Now #21; Best prior run: 9.831/91.26, Was #23

Arend started dropping cylinders early in the run and then finally clicked it off. Wilkerson started to haze the tires just before half track and pedaled it and never could get it to hook up.

Left Lane: John Lawson Runs 6.699/130.28, Now #23; Best prior run: 9.329/86.33, Was #24
Right Lane: Vinny Arcadi No Time, Now #24; Best prior run: 8.911/95.66, Was #23

Arcadi is out of the groove and starts to lose traction and pedals it. when he pedals it the front wheels goes airborne and by the time he is able to get off the throttle all four wheels are off the ground. When the car comes back to ground he brushes the wall. Lawson lost traction and clicked it off.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.909/310.48, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.364/147.44, Was #22
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 14.098/92.99, Now #20; Best prior run: 5.495/191.78, Was #19

Creasy loses traction as soon as he hits the throttle. Head launched hard and keep the Goodyears hooked up all the way through the 1320 for a career best E.T. in a Funny Car for him

Left Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 6.755/126.61, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.233/217.53, Was #19
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 5.234/284.27, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.024/303.30, Was #16

Haddock was a on a pretty good looking pass until just before the finish line when it looked like he used up an engine. Toliver started to lose traction just before half track and then was dropping cylinders, so he will have one more shot at getting in the show.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 9.680/87.05, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.045/305.63, Was #17
Right Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.384/200.59, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.998/301.74, Was #15

Gray lost traction by 330 feet and clicked it off. Gilbertson's engine went silent around 800 feet apparently he lost a blower belt.

Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.913/261.72, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.940/261.93, Was #13

Bartone got to about 200 feet before he blistered the hides. Bazemore was a good looking pass until 1000 feet and then it slowed. Apparently Bazemore lost an engine, because there is oil in his lane. This is second on this weekend, but it is still a freebie. He has one more freebie in the bank.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.858/318.92, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.873/319.29, Was #8

Right Lane: Eric Medlen Runs 4.798/322.27, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.887/318.69, Was #9

Now this was a great looking drag race. Force with a great pass and he was mixing up the cylinders as he crossed the finish line. Medlen with a real nice pass, just a few ticks behind the boss.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.803/320.81, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.824/293.35, Was #6
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.957/155.56, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.837/313.07, Was #8

Pedregon had trouble on the burnout, not really smoking the tires. He got to about half track and lost traction and clicked it off. Densham with a nice looking pass to move up the ladder one spot.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.730/328.54, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.803/323.81, Was #4
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 5.038/233.80, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.827/324.59, Was #7

Worsham launched hard and keep it hitting on all eight and the Goodyears glued to the track all the way down the 1320. This is Worsham's career quickest and fastest pass. Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.877 sec., 330ft-2.271, 660ft-3.246/261.88mph, 1,000ft-4.048

Scelzi got loose around half track and then started dropping cylinders and finally clicked it off.
