MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 20th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Richard Bourke Runs 15.721/84.73, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.390/261.62, Was #6 Right Lane: Bruce Insinger Runs 5.644/247.52, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.627/249.95, Was #16 12:56 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 62 degrees, relative humidity 85 percent, barometer 29.57 inches, adjusted altitude 841 feet, track temperature 70 degrees. Bourke spun and smoked the tires for about 40 feet, then shut down. Insinger had
some tire shake but drove through it. He was not quick enough to move up in the order and off
the bubble. Left Lane: Karen Benkovich Runs 5.491/259.36, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.545/253.47, Was #12 Right Lane: Mark Albert Runs 5.483/256.80, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.428/257.83, Was #7 Benkovich and Albert each had a good-looking runs. Benkovich moved up three spots in the order, Albert stayed where he was. Left Lane: Arthur Gallant Runs 5.310/260.61, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.334/265.69, Was #2 Right Lane: Paul Sylvester No Time, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.012/182.11, Was #20 Gallant had a nice run and it was his quickest of the weekend but it had no effect on his place in the qualifying order. Sylvester's car started smoking at about 1,000 feet, then he veered out of the groove and crossed the center line, taking out the last couple of cones in the process. Left Lane: Ken Winward Runs 5.672/239.95, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.749/230.25, Was #19 Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 5.324/264.49, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.334/264.86, Was #3 We're back racing after a 20-minute delay to clean up the track after Sylvester's pass. Lucas had a nice run that was his quickest of the weekend but had no effect on his spot in the order. Winward's car started smoking at mid track. He did not make the field and will be going home early. Left Lane: John Finke Runs 5.614/254.95, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.551/258.07, Was #13 Right Lane: Steven Cantrell Runs 7.901/97.14, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.540/253.04, Was #12 Bill Reichert and Bruce Horner were supposed to be the next pair after Winward and Lucas but after they started their cars, track officials found oil on the track from Winward's car. So. Reichert and Horner moved to the back of the field for their final qualifying attempt.
Finke drifted out of the groove a bit but stayed with it the whole way down the track. Cantrell
broke a blower belt at mid track. Left Lane: Jeff Veale Runs 5.519/256.41, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.639/251.30, Was #18 Right Lane: Mike Burns Runs 5.494/257.43, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.566/250.00, Was #15 Veale was not in the field and Burns was in the 15th spot when they started their cars. Veale did a burnout that was nearly down to the 1,000 foot cone. Both drivers had the type of laps they needed, with Veale bumping Bruce Insinger out of the order and moving into the 12th spot for now. Burns moved up five spots in the order. Left Lane: Jeff Bohr Runs 5.464/258.76, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.464/256.80, Was #8 Right Lane: Rich McPhillips Runs 5.467/259.76, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.554/251.16, Was #16 McPhillips was on the bubble with a bump time of 5.554 seconds. Bohr's car got a little loose at 330 feet but he stayed with it and equaled his second session ET. McPhillips had his best pass of the weekend and moved up seven spots in the order. Left Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.379/260.76, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.352/264.44, Was #5 Thacker carried the front wheels in the air well past the 330-foot cone. When the front end came down, the rear end of the car got loose. Thacker stayed with it for his second-quickest lap of the weekend. Left Lane: Mike Kosky Runs 5.510/255.63, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.526/257.38, Was #14 Right Lane: Ashley Force Runs 5.307/268.97, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.264/266.95, Was #1 This qualifying pass was also the curfew-delayed To Alcohol Dragster final round from the NHRA Northeast Division points race that was held back in August. Kosky had some minor tire shake for the first 300 feet or so but drove through it and the car settled down. Force had a good run from start to finish. She won the points race and is the number qualifier here for now. Left Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.394/269.46, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.342/272.83, Was #4 Right Lane: Bruce Horner Runs 5.935/190.62, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.637/251.16, Was #18 Reichert and Horner were supposed to make their final attempts earlier but had to wait because oil was found on the track after they had started the engine. Horner did not make the field. Reichert stayed in the fourth position.
