SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. -- Scott Geoffrion was confidence he would be ready to drive in next week's NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., and that feeling was echoed by his physician Wednesday.

Geoffrion, who injured his back in a racing accident at Phoenix (Feb. 23), was told he no longer needed to wear a back brace. Then he underwent his first physical therapy treatment.

"The doctor wants me to do physical therapy until I leave for Florida on Monday," said Geoffrion. "My back was sore because I had muscle and tissue damage from the accident, but I'm feeling much better now. My back has been getting better each day. I didn't think I'd have to miss the race."

Geoffrion will be debuting a new Hurley Blakeney-owned Ford Escort ZX2 at the Gatornationals. The NitroFish-sponsored car will be the only ZX2 competing in the Pro Stock category.

"We hope to be testing the car at Bradenton, Fla., Tuesday and Wednesday, but it might be just Wednesday," added Geoffrion. "The crew should have the car in Florida no later than Tuesday. Fortunately for us, it's just a short drive from Bradenton to Gainesville."

A broken left brake rotor caused Geoffrion's Mustang to go out of control just past the finish line at Phoenix. He kept the car from hitting the left guard wall but it turned right, crossed the track and crashed hard into the right barrier.
