GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Due to soggy ground conditions in some of the sportsman pit areas at Gainesville Raceway, NHRA officials announced today that four sportsman categories competing in this weekend's Mac Tools Gatornationals will relocate to nearby Orlando Speed World Dragway for time trials, qualifying and early elimination rounds. The four NHRA POWERade Series pro categories (Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Bike), along with three NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series categories (Alcohol Dragster, Alcohol Funny Car and Competition Eliminator) will compete at Gainesville Raceway, which is forecasted to have excellent weather throughout the race weekend. Competitors entered in Stock, Super Stock, Super Comp and Super Gas will report to Orlando Speed World Dragway for tech registration on Thursday and competition on Friday and Saturday. The 16 cars that advance to the final elimination bracket in each of the four categories will then return to Gainesville Raceway for final eliminations, which begin Sunday at 11 a.m. "Gainesville Raceway has taken on a lot of rain during the last two months and several parts of the property remain wet, and we don't expect that condition to improve before sportsman racing was scheduled to begin," said Graham Light, NHRA senior vice president for race operations. "After evaluating all options given the circumstances that we are faced with, we have decided to run time trials, qualifying and some eliminations for Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp and Super Gas at an alternate site. The final 16 competitors in each of those categories will return to Gainesville Raceway on Sunday for final eliminations." Because of the revised schedule, racing at Gainesville Raceway for the 34th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals will begin on Friday, March 14. The Pro Mod exhibition also will run as scheduled at Gainesville Raceway. Parking for spectators attending the event will be available at the traditional spectator lots at Gainesville Raceway, as well as several remote lots.
