Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 34th annual MAC Tools NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Keith Stark Runs 13.597/61.21, Now #2
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 8.110/112.96, Now #1

8:59 AM Reichert got very sideways, spinning the tires hard on the launch, and lifted near half track. Stark's car sputtered, dropped cylinders, and he coasted through.

Left Lane: Randy Bayne Runs 5.858/231.89, Now #2
Right Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.498/257.14, Now #1

Nice pass by Thacker, a 0.927 60-foot time getting things started, but the car was trailing a light mist of oil all the way down the track - a quick swipe with the tractor took care of it. Bayne's car was sluggish off the line with a 1.134 60-foot time, then picked it back up a bit.

Left Lane: Michael Gunderson Runs 5.373/268.89, Now #1
Right Lane: Tim Rudy Runs 18.231/41.02, Now #6

Gunderson's car sounded awful on the burnout - what's new? When the light turned green, the car "flat flew," with a 3.583 at 219.35 mph half-track clocking. Rudy's car went nowhere, the rear tires spinning in a huge pool of water (yup, water).

Left Lane: Mark Albert Runs 5.655/251.67, Now #3
Right Lane: Guy Kelly Runs 11.687/60.63, Now #6

Kelly launched hard, a 0.924 60-foot time, but then it looked like a fuel fitting let go because the rear tires broke loose and the car got very sideways, giving him a good look at the wall. Albert made a good pass, but trailed oil vapor from about 400 feet on.

Left Lane: Arthur Gallant Runs 5.362/245.83, Now #1
Right Lane: Don Fiorelli Runs 9.814/91.27, Now #7

Gallant's car is till red and white, but has no sponsor's logo on the side. Fiorelli spun the tires and turned sideways on the launch, so he gave it up. No tire spin for Gallant on an impressive run, right from the start. Arthur Gallant's incremental times: 60ft-0.903 sec., 330ft-2.367, 660ft-3.509/218.65mph, 1,000ft-4.491

Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.358/269.38, Now #1
Right Lane: Douglas Foley Runs 5.572/249.72, Now #5

Bartone's car is now painted, a nice-looking silver-grey and orange paint scheme. The extra weight of the paint didn't seem to slow him down much and he took the top spot away from Gallant. Good run for Foley, no obvious problems. Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.971 sec., 330ft-2.447, 660ft-3.579/221.51mph, 1,000ft-4.534

Left Lane: Artie Allen Runs 6.127/246.10, Now #9
Right Lane: Bill Mc Cornack Runs 5.651/228.02, Now #6

Allen had to pedal out of shake. Clean pass for McCornack

Left Lane: Shelly Howard No Time, Now #16
Right Lane: Richard Bourke Runs 5.316/270.59, Now #1

It looked like a fuel line let go on Howard's car, the big dragster getting very sideways, crossing the centerline and getting up on the two right-side tires as she struggled to get it to turn up the track. She didn't hit anything, but it was a wild ride. meanwhile, Bourke went down the track, unnoticed until the numbers came up - he stole the limelight from the usual "big hitters" with an awesome pass. Richard Bourke's incremental times: 60ft-0.951 sec., 330ft-2.421, 660ft-3.541/223.21mph, 1,000ft-4.494.

Left Lane: David Wells Runs 6.226/212.21, Now #11
Right Lane: Jason Cannon Runs 8.303/101.05, Now #13

Cannon left hard, but slowed around half track, the problem not evident. Wells' car was slow off the starting line and never did come up to full song.

Left Lane: Fran Monaghan Jr Runs 6.346/148.80, Now #12

Last car. Monaghan got off the line okay, but the car was a bit loose at half track and then he lifted. That's it for now, they will be back this afternoon for another session, nineteen cars making runs during this one.
