GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 34th annual MAC Tools NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Marty McGinnis Runs 6.349/221.34, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.350/218.23, Was #14 Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 13.860/58.73, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.200/229.12, Was #3 2:54 PM Current weather conditions: 76 degrees, 61 percent relative humidity, the barometer 29.92 inches, with a track temperature of 103 degrees. The bump as we open the last
session is Shannon Jenkins' 6.259 (in a borrowed car). No help for McGinnis, despite a good
effort. Stott lost traction very early, maybe trying for another five?? Left Lane: Zach Barklage Runs 6.556/190.39, Now #20; Best prior run: 9.933/85.24, Was #23 Right Lane: Bill Hill Runs 6.493/219.67, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.581/216.24, Was #19 No help here either, though both made much-improved runs. Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 10.190/85.50, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.388/220.48, Was #16 Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.605/161.11, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.259/221.40, Was #8 Jenkins' car headed for the 330-foot marker and he corrected nicely, but the engine went away around 1,000 feet with a puff of smoke. Critchley chattered the tires and called it off early in the run. Now all Jenkins can do is watch as the rest of the unqualified cars take a shot at him. Left Lane: Mike Stawicki Runs 9.373/103.75, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.251/224.83, Was #7 Right Lane: Johnny Rocca Runs 8.008/110.14, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.489/209.20, Was #18 Stawicki shook hard and lifted. Rocca appeared to lose the engine at half track, coasting the rest of the way. Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.405/218.81, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.391/218.34, Was #17 Right Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 13.349/61.94, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.246/225.45, Was #6 Ray made a pretty good pass, but failed to improve and he will be a spectator Sunday. Ashley, already in the field, tried to rotate the Earth and chattered the tires instead. Left Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.288/224.77, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.223/224.88, Was #5 Right Lane: Bill Kuhlmann Runs 6.365/220.42, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.655/192.71, Was #21 Two good runs, Kuhlmann's car still trying to turn left. He came up short, but this run was a major improvement over his earlier efforts and he appears to be just a run or two away from having the car sorted out. Nice pass by McAmis, the quickest of the session so far. Left Lane: Cody McManama Runs 6.358/221.72, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.342/221.23, Was #13 Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.384/192.88, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.214/229.65, Was #4 McManama out ran Stott on this run, but neither was anywhere close to the record bump time for this race. Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 11.042/75.66, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.287/221.29, Was #10 Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 10.468/84.16, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.261/224.10, Was #9 These two had a solid potential for breaking into the field, Castellana driving the car that Shannon Jenkins drove the the championship last year and Smith...well, "TGricky Rickie" has completed many "Hail Mary" passes in his career. But it was not to be, both cars shook, both drivers lifted. Left Lane: Roy Hill Runs 6.389/221.18, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.382/220.21, Was #16 Hill appears to be getting the feel of the supercharged car, making a smooth burnout to half track. The car drifted left, out of the groove. Hill did a good job of driving to save the run, but he won't get to play tomorrow.
