The bump was Bob Leverich's 17.281 as the round opened. Rudy's car slowed immediately and coasted through, but Thacker
made a strong, straight run to move one rung up the ladder. Left Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.486/236.09, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.549/237.17, Was #7 Right Lane: Richard Bourke Runs 5.373/266.48, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.385/263.98, Was #1 These two were right together until half track, then Hitchman dropped a cylinder or two, the car trailing unburned fuel, and Bourke pulled ahead and improved his hold on the #1 spot. Despite the top-end problems, Hitchman stepped up a few hundredths of a tenth of a second, enough to move several rungs up the ladder. Left Lane: Don Fiorelli Runs 6.038/230.45, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.077/228.07, Was #14 Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.279/274.27, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.543/252.95, Was #7 Hello #1! With a stout run and a huge speed, Reichert moved right up to the top of the heap. Fiorelli's car appeared to be way down on power by comparison. Bill Reichert's incremental times: 60ft-0.946 sec., 330ft-2.411, 660ft-3.523/225.63mph, 1,000ft-4.467 Left Lane: Keith Stark Runs 5.754/256.21, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.713/251.63, Was #10 Right Lane: Guy Kelly Runs 5.411/261.37, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.297/204.79, Was #15 Stark's car made a move toward the wall on the launch and Stark had to rein it in to complete the run. Meanwhile, Kelly moved from the bottom of the ladder to the third spot, taking over as the quickest blown car so far this weekend, with a nice-looking effort. Left Lane: Arthur Gallant Runs 5.405/252.38, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.431/242.06, Was #5 Right Lane: Dana Stripe Runs 5.863/236.17, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.952/215.65, Was #13 Small improvements for both drivers on two clean runs. Left Lane: Bill McCornack Runs 5.601/241.97, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.581/247.93, Was #9 Right Lane: Fran Monaghan Jr Runs 5.655/247.43, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.616/251.72, Was #10 Two blown cars, neither improved over their previous best. Left Lane: Jason Cannon Runs 5.557/260.11, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.542/258.86, Was #8 Cannon fails to improve, but appears ready to run mid-fifties in eliminations. Left Lane: Douglas Foley Runs 5.587/255.34, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.494/256.36, Was #7 Three good runs by Cannon in qualifying should have him ready to race this afternoon. Left Lane: Robert Leverich No Time, Now #16; Best prior run: 17.281/69.60, Was #16 Leverich's crew fired the engine, looked at it intently, and finally shut it off without making a run. Leverich was the last car of the round, so it appears that Michael Gunderson damaged his car too badly in the first qualifying session to repair it this weekend.
