ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 34th annual K&N Filters SuperNationals presented by Pep Boys listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Todd Veney Runs 5.733/253.85, Now #2; No Prior Run Right Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 6.509/171.53, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.952/115.17, Was #14 2:25 PM Current weather conditions: 56 degrees, 74 percent relative humidity, the absolute barometer 29.97 inches, with a track temperature of 77 degrees. Veney debuts the
"Follow A Dream" car with a nice, straight run, maybe a bit of tire shake on the launch judging
from the tire tracks. Tigges lost a lot of ground to Veney in the first half of the track,
clicking it off very early. Left Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.674/255.29, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.627/247.20, Was #12 Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.681/248.29, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.615/257.58, Was #1 Valvoline cars, a pair. Bob Frey pointed out a few minutes ago that out of the 22 years TAFC has competed at this event, either Newberry, Frank Manzo, or both, have been in the final round 16 times. Payne made a typical Jay Payne run, the car dancing and darting around, the front wheels in the air, and he never lifted. Meanwhile, Newberry went right down the groove to earn a major improvement over his tire-spinning first effort. Left Lane: Jim Sickles Runs 5.875/250.41, Now #7; No Prior Run Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 5.905/243.55, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.541/128.62, Was #14 Sickles shook hard and crossed the outer boundary in the first round, barely missing the wall. Lee also shook, but stayed between the lines. Much improved runs for both this time around, two full passes with no major difficulties. Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.736/259.56, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.059/186.46, Was #11 Right Lane: Bruce Mullins No Time, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.074/237.17, Was #12 Manzo was on a very good first pass when the engine went silent on the top half of the run. Mullins went right down the lane, but appeared down on power. This time Manzo had to lift briefly when the car tried to cross the center line, but he moved up with "the big boys." Mullins had an animal on his hands, the front wheels in the air and the rear tires shaking hard, driving him toward the wall. He pedaled, but crossed the boundary line, avoiding the wall by a foot or so. His time, an improved 6.011, won't count. Left Lane: Charles Gambino Runs 5.932/238.72, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.855/115.64, Was #16 Right Lane: Scott Woodington Runs 6.648/197.71, Now #16; Best prior run: 8.236/125.18, Was #17 Much better runs in both lanes, Gambino getting off the bump spot and Woodington moving onto it. Gambino went right down the groove. Woodington's car shook and moved around a lot and he shut it off well before the finish line.That bumped Bruce Peterson. Right Lane: Paul Gill Runs 5.677/246.93, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.833/241.89, Was #6 Very pretty run by Gill, the car smoothly down the middle of the groove and into the top quarter of the field. Right Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 5.975/247.25, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.986/247.47, Was #12 Martin didn't have any visible problems on his first pass, but his car is capable of more. This time he shook hard on the launch and did a nice job of pedaling to get out of it. That's it for now, several drivers skipping this round.
