Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 34th annual K&N Filters SuperNationals presented by Pep Boys listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: David Strouse Jr. Runs 11.341/77.33, Now #1
Right Lane: John Nobile No Time, Now #2

4:03 PM Current weather conditions: 58 degrees, 70 percent relative humidity, the absolute barometer 29.81 inches, with a track temperature of 81 degrees.

Can you say "mine shaft," boys and girls? Everyone expects the quickest field ever, which will take a bump time better than 6.768 seconds. Nobile, driving for Tom Martino this weekend because Martino has a back problem, barely got off the line, the engine going silent. He coasted to a stop just past the 1,000-foot marker. Strouse left hard, posting a 0.998 60-foot time, shook, and gave it up.

Left Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 6.814/204.08, Now #2
Right Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.798/202.67, Now #1

After a short delay while Nobile was towed off the track, racing resumed. Tom Martino is supplying the power plant for Benza and is restricting himself to crew chief duties, despite a sore back. Two good-looking runs here, easily career-best numbers for both drivers - look at Northrop's speed!

Left Lane: Vinny Barone No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Nick Fratt Runs 6.852/202.85, Now #3

Barone shook and slowed. He moved into the right lane to take the early turnoff, getting no time. Career-best speed for Fratt.

Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.778/204.01, Now #2
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.777/203.34, Now #1

Morgan is back in a Neon this weekend. Career-best speed and elapsed time for both drivers.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.862/200.83, Now #6
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.880/203.31, Now #7

Both cars were a bit loose and it cost them, marnell with a career-best speed, but way off the numbers he hoped for.

Left Lane: JR Carr Runs 10.890/81.60, Now #9
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.750/204.98, Now #1

Carr shook and shut off. Wilson made a career-best (500 cubic inch)run, both elapsed time and speed, starting with a 0.992 60-foot time. He is the only Mopar driver in a Stratus this weekend.

Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.839/202.76, Now #7
Right Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.736/204.45, Now #1

Career-best run by Grant, starting with a 0.990 60-foot time. Watson left hard, but fell behind Grant early in the run.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.777/203.06, Now #4
Right Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 6.794/204.73, Now #6

Career-best ET and speed for Lastor after losing a couple hundredths on the launch. Good run by Coughlin, but not his best-ever.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.806/204.17, Now #9
Right Lane: Terry Adams Runs 6.742/205.38, Now #2

Gaines lost a little ground early and then smoked the engine in the lights, still making his fastest run ever. Career-best marks for Adams, running the third-best speed ever.

Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.815/203.74, Now #12
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.762/204.39, Now #4

Stanfield lost ground to Yates early in the run and Yates couldn't match the torrid pace of some of the earlier runners. The bump is already 6.880 and falling fast.

Left Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.789/202.97, Now #9
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.729/205.13, Now #1

Pawuk posts career-best numbers en route to the temporary #1 spot. Whisnant manages a career-best speed, but not elapsed time. Now the bump is 6.852.

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.751/204.48, Now #6
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.727/205.41, Now #1

Both drivers posted 0.994 60-foot time, matching Pawuk's short time, and Krisher made a career-best pass to edge Mark off the top of the ladder. Alderman ran a career-best speed, but not ET.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.724/204.76, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.778/204.51, Now #11

Career-best ET for Johnson, in a Neon this weekend, matching his career-best speed. Career-best speed for Edwards. Now the bump is down to 6.806.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.778/203.61, Now #13
Right Lane: Bruce Allen No Time, Now #28

Allen pre-staged, then shut it off and was pushed back. Geoffrion came up a bit short of expectations, having run better numbers already this season and dangerously close to the bump time, now down to 6.798. The Safety Safari did a cleanup in Allen's lane, so it looks like he lost some slick stuff on the burnout.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.748/203.80, Now #7
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.729/205.69, Now #3

Jeg had an unreal 0.986 60-foot time and a career-best elapsed time, WJ ran the fastest speed ever.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.723/205.91, Now #1
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.849/201.76, Now #24

Last two cars, can there be a sixty in here somewhere? Nope, but the fastest Pro Stock speed ever and a career-best elapsed time for Anderson ought to make him feel pretty good. Kurt lost a little ground early in the run, then really fell off the pace around half track. Greg Anderson's incremental times: 60ft-1.005 sec., 330ft-2.817, 660ft-4.330/162.82mph, 1,000ft-5.629. The session ends with a 6.723 on "the pole," and a 6.778 (Geoffrion) on the bubble, just a hundredth of a second and five cars away from the quickest field ever.
