Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 34th annual K&N Filters SuperNationals presented by Pep Boys listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 8.045/126.89, Now #29; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Vinny Barone Runs 7.123/188.83, Now #28; No Prior Run

12:35 PM Current weather conditions: 54 degrees, 77 percent relative humidity, the absolute barometer 30.17 inches, with a track temperature of 74 degrees.

Allen's car was slipping and sliding as he went down the track.

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.768/203.65, Now #12; No Prior Run
Right Lane: David Strouse Jr. Runs 6.826/202.09, Now #24; Best prior run: 11.341/77.33, Was #31

Nobile got the Martino car down the track this time, but that time may not be good enough to stay in under these conditions.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.799/203.34, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.880/203.31, Was #29
Right Lane: JR Carr Runs 6.791/202.61, Now #19; Best prior run: 10.890/81.60, Was #32

Big improvements for both, but not good enough for this very quick field.

Left Lane: Nick Fratt Runs 6.869/203.34, Now #30; Best prior run: 6.852/202.85, Was #29
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.770/202.82, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.862/200.83, Was #30

Fratt had a lot of tire spin on the launch and Thomas' time may not be good enough to stick.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.724/205.76, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.849/201.76, Was #29
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.782/204.23, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.839/202.76, Was #28

KJ's car went right down the track this time around, so maybe the conditions aren't quite as good as everyone thinks they are...oh yeah, career-best runs by both drivers, ET and speed.

Left Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.801/202.03, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.798/202.67, Was #24
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.741/205.04, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.815/203.74, Was #28

Career-best pass by Stanfield, the red car in the middle of the field for now.

Left Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 6.769/204.73, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.794/204.73, Was #24
Right Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 6.735/204.82, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.814/204.08, Was #28

Maskin power in Lastor's car, Grumpy power in Northrop's. The relatively untested Grumpy combination prevailed, Lastor losing ground to Northrop with some early moves. Oh yes, we're only one car away from the quickest Pro Stock field ever, the bump time now 6.769.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 14.380/55.90, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.778/204.51, Was #20
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.777/204.70, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.806/204.17, Was #28

Shake for Edwards. Not quite enough for Gaines, getting a bit out of the groove in the middle of the run.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.795/203.40, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.777/203.34, Was #19
Right Lane: Mark Whisnant No Time, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.789/202.97, Was #25

Whisnant's car shut off after the burnout and was pushed away. Morgan had a super-stout launch, with a 1.005 60-foot time, but lost some ground to the quicker cars in the first 330 feet.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.715/204.79, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.762/204.39, Was #14
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.728/204.82, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.778/203.61, Was #23

This is now the quickest Pro Stock field ever, and Yates just ran the quickest elapsed time ever - and his 6.76 from the first round backs it up (but we aren't done yet). Oh yeah, nice run by the Ford, but he was second at the line. Jim Yates' incremental times: 60ft-0.995 sec., 330ft-2.804, 660ft-4.316/162.84 mph,1,000ft-5.617.

Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.841/203.89, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.750/204.98, Was #14
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.823/203.92, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.778/204.01, Was #23

Wilson's car may have shook a bit, losing ground in the first 300 feet.

Left Lane: Terry Adams Runs 6.744/205.35, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.742/205.38, Was #12
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.734/203.77, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.777/203.06, Was #21

Adams failed to improve and Coughlin pushed him down a notch, making this the quickest field ever with a 6.751 bump time.

Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.790/203.92, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.736/204.45, Was #11
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.734/205.26, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.751/204.48, Was #16

Grant's car made a hard move to the right on the launch. Alderman moved off the bump, putting Gene Wilson on the bubble at 6.750.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.729/204.48, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.729/205.13, Was #8
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.805/204.11, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.748/203.80, Was #15

The remaining cars are already in the field, so there won't be any more bumping this round.Jeg's car made a hard move to the right on the launch, hurting his elapsed time. Nice run by Pawuk, a little out of the groove, but matching his prior elapsed time.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.741/204.57, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.729/205.69, Was #7
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.718/205.26, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.724/204.76, Was #4

Wow! WJ had a 0.999 60-foot time and was already second-quickest in this pair, AJ with a super-stout 0.991 and a career-best run, both ET and speed.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 13.135/64.56, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.727/205.41, Was #5
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.702/207.08, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.723/205.91, Was #3

Krisher's car shook and skated around, but Anderson stunned everyone by skipping right over the 206 mph range with the quickest and fastest run ever, by a ton! Greg Anderson's incremental times: 60ft-1.006 sec., 330ft-2.813, 660ft-4.319/163.31mph, 1,000ft-5.612. Both numbers are backed up by his first-round ET and speed, so they are unofficially records (they won't be official until the end of the event).
