Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

TOPEKA, Kan. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 15th annual O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Larry Peternel Runs 7.007/195.25, Now #1
Right Lane: Jeff Dickey Runs 7.019/194.72, Now #2

4:34 PM Current weather conditions: 74 degrees, 63 percent relative humidity, the corrected barometer 30.08 inches under partly cloudy skies.

We don't see these two very often and Peternel had the better run of the two to get a very provisional pole position.

Left Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.912/199.32, Now #1
Right Lane: Nick Fratt Runs 6.993/198.82, Now #2

Haas crashed earlier this week at Gateway (Madison, IL) when the steering box came off. The car is a bit scraped up, but was not seriously damaged. He made a pretty good run, but we have no "top dog" times to compare it with.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.916/199.23, Now #2
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.935/199.11, Now #3

Morgan is still in a Neon this weekend. He moved right in behind Haas on the ladder.

Left Lane: JR Carr Runs 6.897/199.46, Now #1
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.942/199.70, Now #5

Our sources tell us Carr is running a new Panella GM engine this weekend. Wilson is in the Stratus again here. Looks like the new power plant may work out, the first in the eighties this weekend. Wilson's car wiggled two or three times on the launch, hurting the elapsed time a bit.

Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.915/199.17, Now #3
Right Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.916/199.05, Now #5

Watson had one of the best weekends of his career last weekend. Both drivers made clean runs.

Left Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 6.913/200.83, Now #4
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.901/200.74, Now #2

Lastor lost a tire while testing at Maple Grove earlier this week. Lots of tire spin in both lanes for this pair.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.911/199.17, Now #4
Right Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.903/199.37, Now #3

Good launches, 1.006 for Whisnant and 1.014 for Coughlin. Looks like 6.91 will be close to the bump time by the end of the session.

Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.859/200.26, Now #1
Right Lane: Terry Adams Runs 6.886/200.50, Now #2

Nice run by Stanfield in the Mopar, a 1.009 short time getting him off to a quick start. Adams lost a hundredth or so to Stanfield in each quarter of the track.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.870/200.08, Now #2
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.900/200.14, Now #5

Two more good-looking runs, but Pawuk lost a lot of ground at the start with a 1.031 60-foot time compared with Yates' 1.012.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.857/201.34, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.898/199.29, Now #6

Krisher shows everyone the quick way down the track on a nice pass. Edwards was close for the first 330 feet, then lost ground.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.857/201.10, Now #2
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.892/199.82, Now #6

The bump for these two was George Marnell's 6.935, the bump time falling quickly. Geoffrion slipped into the second spot by virtue of a slower speed. Alderman, also in a Neon, lost most of his ground in the first half of the run.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.903/200.05, Now #12
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.871/199.94, Now #5

Another Neon. AJ was slightly slower than Alderman at each timer. Allen, who had a horrible weekend at Englishtown, appears to have his handling ills fixed and he made a nice run.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.860/200.68, Now #4
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.877/201.25, Now #7

Krisher remains atop the order after two more good runs. The bump is now Troy Coughlin's 6.911.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.872/201.67, Now #8
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.858/201.43, Now #3

Krisher's run was very good indeed, holding off the two hottest drivers in this part of the season. The first session ends with the bump being Allen Johnson's 6.903.
