Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Larry Sullivan

TOPEKA, Kan. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 15th annual O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jeff Dickey Runs 7.042/195.14, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.019/194.72, Was #28

4:04 PM This is it, the last shot. Current weather conditions: 74 degrees, 72 percent relative humidity, the barometer 29.92 inches under sunny skies.

If anything, conditions for this session are worse than they were for the third session, so changes in the field are extremely unlikely. Dickey, for example, lost a few thousandths from his run earlier today.

Left Lane: Nick Fratt Runs 6.989/198.03, Now #26; Best prior run: 6.960/197.88, Was #26
Right Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 7.026/196.99, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.912/199.32, Was #24

Nope...

Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.937/199.11, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.916/199.05, Was #25
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.929/198.90, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.911/199.17, Was #23

They are shooting at V. Gaines' 6.883 bump time, by the way. Grant virtually duplicated his earlier run today. Troy got off the line cleaner, but didn't pick up enough to get in.

Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.941/199.43, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.902/200.86, Was #21
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.066/197.25, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.904/199.55, Was #22

Morgan skied into the seven-second range with another slow move off the starting line. The trend continues...

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.902/199.49, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.886/199.94, Was #19
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.924/198.47, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.895/198.64, Was #20

Nope. Both drivers were quicker than they were earlier today, but not quick enough.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.918/199.43, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.883/199.85, Was #17
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 12.719/66.79, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.885/200.35, Was #18

If AJ could improve as much over his earlier run as Alderman did, he'd get in...but he shook hard and his weekend was over. Marnell improved over his morning run, but not enough to improve over his best run yesterday.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.917/200.35, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.883/200.83, Was #16
Right Lane: JR Carr Runs 6.945/198.38, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.875/199.35, Was #15

Everyone else in line is already in the field, so there will be no bumping today and the field may stay the way it looked last night.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.896/199.58, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.871/200.17, Was #14
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.906/198.93, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.859/200.26, Was #11

Edwards is the first into the eighties this round...

Left Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.952/198.73, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.862/200.17, Was #13
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.972/198.99, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.857/201.10, Was #10

Whisnant wiggled his way down the left side of the groove, fighting the car all the way. Geoffrion lost a lot of ground early in the run.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.877/200.53, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.860/201.55, Was #12
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.895/199.55, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.857/201.34, Was #9

WJ is running a new car here, the old one with 906 runs on it, so he's just beginning to sort this one out. Yesterday, the car didn't even have the contingency decals on it. Here he made just the second run of the day under the bump time, giving everyone else something to shoot at.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 9.650/92.73, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.853/200.71, Was #6
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.963/198.90, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.855/200.44, Was #8

Pawuk slowed between the 330 and half-track timers. Jeg made his slowest run of the weekend.

Left Lane: Terry Adams Runs 6.920/199.55, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.851/201.31, Was #5
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.935/198.17, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.855/200.59, Was #7

Two more unable to beat the bump time...

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 12.566/68.60, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.848/200.71, Was #3
Right Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 6.899/200.14, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.849/201.16, Was #4

Allen had handling problems at Englishtown, but appeared to have them sorted out on his first two passes here. Earlier today, however, the car got way out of shape and the handling problems struck again on this attempt, the car getting sideways on the launch. Lastor made a good run, posting just the second 200 mph speed of the round so far (WJ was the first).

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.878/200.74, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.825/202.15, Was #1
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.895/200.50, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.838/201.76, Was #2

Final pair, the field looking just like it did last night. Two more 200 mph speeds, Anderson joining WJ as the only two drivers to better the bump time in this session. In all, only three runs today were better than the 16th qualifier's time yesterday, and Anderson made two of them. In the final session, however, WJ was quickest, by a thousandth of a second.
