JOLIET, Ill. -- Get your facts straight mate – We reported yesterday that Bill Barrett was assisting the AMS team and according to the Australian Troy Critchley our facts were off. Barrett, a noted Hemi tuner, has offered assistance on Bill Hill’s Budweiser-sponsored entry. As for Critchley, the Aussie’s done his own tuning. That’s moving man – Critchley seems to have the AMS Corvette making improvements with each outing. During the third session, the past IHRA national event winner and Australian national champion recorded his finest lap to date, a 6.181, 225.30 to claim the third spot. This marks the best qualifying effort ever for the Dave Wood team. Learning from their mistakes – After making the wrong call on Friday’s combination, Fred Hahn admitted that the snafu provided good data to steer them in the right direction for Saturday. In fact, they took it all the way to the top spot. Give it a shot – After making it solidly into the field Mike Ashley decided to test a new set of Mickey Thompson tires. The first hit produced a hard launch, but the car made a sharp left and he was forced to lift. Ashley was optimistic of the tires and felt that the more runs he can make, the better it will get. Revolving Door – The final session began with Scott Ray in the seventh spot and Johnny Rocca on the bubble. Marty McGinnis then bumped Rocca from the show and settled into the seventh spot. Rocca got his shot and jumped into the show on the bubble and sent Ray packing. Ray then took his shot and bumped Rocca out by .009. Happy Birthday to me, Can I get some connecting rods? – The tough luck award goes to Zach Barklage who celebrated his 19th birthday on Friday and then mortally wounded his engine to the point he had to withdraw from competition. Show me McGinnis – Out of all of the Missouri racers in attendance, it was unheralded Marty McGinnis that stole the show by making the field.
