HEBRON, Ohio - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run: Left Lane: Russ Lindert Runs 5.589/252.90, Now #1 Right Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 6.237/187.78, Now #2 3:11 PM Current weather conditions: 78 degrees, 69 percent relative humidity, the barometer 29.97 inches, under overcast skies. Nice opening pass by the 2002 winner of this
event, right down the groove with no evidence of engine problems. Samsel dropped a cylinder
early and his A-Fueler trailed a visible plume of raw fuel on the top end. Left Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 5.593/246.98, Now #2 Right Lane: Jeff Bohr Runs 5.795/250.13, Now #3 Bohr shook the tires and pedaled about 100 feet out. Hirata led this one all the way, much quicker from 330 feet on. Left Lane: Douglas Foley Runs 5.667/247.66, Now #3 Right Lane: Todd Datweiler Runs 5.702/257.38, Now #4 This time it was the A-Fuel car with the shakes, Datweiler pedaling about 200 feet into the run. Otherwise, two clean passes, right down the groove. Left Lane: Jeff Wilson Runs 5.546/256.21, Now #2 Right Lane: Arthur Gallant Runs 5.495/250.78, Now #1 Two good runs, taking over the top two spots, Gallant the first into the forties this weekend. Left Lane: Steven Cantrell Runs 5.648/239.14, Now #6 Right Lane: Bill McCornack Runs 5.575/249.90, Now #3 McCornack pulled ahead early and stayed there, Cantrell losing a lot of ground on the top half of the run. Left Lane: Mark Albert Runs 5.700/244.83, Now #8 Right Lane: Dana Stripe Runs 6.124/189.02, Now #11 Albert flirted with the centerline from half track on. Stripe's car shook on the launch and never did get a good run going. Left Lane: Jared Dreher Runs 5.646/250.09, Now #6 Right Lane: Ken Perry Runs 6.078/180.60, Now #12 Good run for Dreher, but his car laid down a bit on the top end of the run. Perry shook and pedaled about 100 feet out. Left Lane: Mike Kosky No Time, Now #16 Right Lane: Tim Rudy Runs 9.834/98.54, Now #15 These two made their burnouts and then were shut off, a light sprinkle falling on the launch pad. After a fifteen-minute delay, they refired their engines and made a second burnout. This time they got to run. Kosky's car slowly rolled through the beams, turning on the red light just before the tree came down. Rudy launched, shook, dropped a couple cylinders, and shut it off. Left Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.459/258.12, Now #1 Right Lane: Shelly Howard Runs 5.633/255.39, Now #7 Two of the best blown cars in the country lined up here. Thacker continues to show strength, making a clean, straight run to take over the top spot, while Howard shook and lost ground early in her run. Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.558/258.17, Now #4 Right Lane: Rich McPhillips Runs 6.070/242.98, Now #15 Bartone had a dead cylinder from half track on. McPhillips shook and dropped a cylinder early in his run. Left Lane: Keith Stark Runs 6.082/238.26, Now #18 Right Lane: Gary Ward Runs 5.778/243.68, Now #14 The wing on Ward's car flipped back on the launch, still held to the supports by the rear retaining bolts - it looked almost like somebody forgot to put the front bolts in to hold the wing atop the supports. Even with the wing acting more like a speed brake, Ward made a straight, smooth run. Stark's car shook and dropped cylinders immediately. Left Lane: Robert Leverich Runs 8.892/140.21, Now #21 Leverich's car lurched off the line, the engine sputtered, then it lurched again, and finally he shut it off.
