NHRA Announces Winners of 2003 Sears Craftsman Scholarship

GLENDORA, Calif. -- The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) has announced the recipients of the 2003 NHRA Youth and Education Services Sears Craftsman Scholarship. Three students from each of the seven geographic divisions of the NHRA received $1,000 awards.

One of the 21 recipients will be selected as the grand-prize winner and awarded a scholarship valued at up to $25,000 which will be presented at the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals at Gateway International Raceway on Sunday, June 29.

The Sears Craftsman Scholarship is funded to provide an incentive for graduating high school seniors to continue their education at the post secondary level, while acknowledging the academic achievement, citizenship, extracurricular activities, community service, and work experience of each applicant.

Winners of the scholarship were assessed on the five following categories: Scholastic record, school activities and community involvement, personal, handwritten statement (essay), recommendations and financial need.

Winners included: (Division 1, Northeast) Lee Schwab, North Java, N.Y.; Christopher Cycak, Creamridge, N.J.; Graham Berry, Kensington, N.H.; (Division 2, Southeast) Timothy White, Valrico, Fla.; Michael Scoma, Middleburg, Fla.; Eric Elrod, Chatsworth, Ga.; (Division 3, North Central) Rachel Markos, Battle Creek, Mich.; Christopher Smith, Mooresville, Ind.; Chad Weaver, Alliance, Ohio; (Division 4, South Central) Rusty Bramlett, Clarksville, Ark.; Collin Hadley, Paris, Texas; Jared Rowlan, Waka, Texas; (Division 5, West Central) Gavin Young, Wheaton, Minn.; Saburo Watanabe, Hudson, Colo.; Brian Amass, Rolla, Mo.; (Division 6, Northwest) Justin Frantz, Eagle Point, Ore.; Kyle McDaniel, Wallowa, Ore.; Adam DePeel, Gladstone, Ore.; (Division 7, Pacific) Daniel Gamble, Battle Mountain, Nev.; Nick Holmer, Reno, Nev.; Brian Mills, Willcox, Ariz.
