Pro Modified Qualifying Notes, Session #3

MADISON, Ill. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Seventh annual Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 6.352/223.99, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.363/221.96, Was #8
Right Lane: Wayne Torkelson Runs 6.423/218.02, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.447/217.91, Was #13

4:22 PM Current weather conditions: 88 degrees, 34 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.00 inches, with a track temperature of 121 degrees.

Torkelson was moving around but never got out of the groove. Ashley improves just enough to get off the bump.

Left Lane: Johnny Rocca Runs 6.393/221.74, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.386/220.37, Was #10
Right Lane: Marty McGinnis Runs 6.535/217.28, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.740/214.21, Was #17

McGinnis shakes the tires off the line, drives through it , but doesn't improve enough to get in the show. Rocca goes right down the groove but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.398/219.65, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.307/221.78, Was #5
Right Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 7.094/140.40, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.388/195.85, Was #11

Hahn shakes the tires off the line, gets just past half-track and smoke starts pouring out the left side of the engine. Smith slows from his runs yesterday and will stay in the fifth spot.

Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.695/213.40, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.349/220.87, Was #6
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 6.946/153.16, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.295/220.12, Was #4

Castellana had trouble getting his engine to fire and had to do a short burnout. He spins the tires off the line and never recovers.

Left Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.257/225.90, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.252/225.26, Was #2
Right Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 6.425/223.80, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.354/223.58, Was #8

Patterson makes a great run in the heat of the day and almost equals his best qualifying pass.

Left Lane: Frankie Taylor Runs 6.392/219.83, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.421/218.02, Was #12
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.328/220.01, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.287/221.42, Was #3

Taylor makes a slight improvement on his earlier runs but still doesn't get in the show. A nice run for jenkins, right down the groove, but no improvement.

Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.618/175.94, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.100/144.32, Was #19
Right Lane: Mike Stawicki Runs 8.060/120.85, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.055/218.83, Was #18

Stawicki pulls the wheels off the line, sets the front in down and starts spinning the tires. Janis makes his best pass of the weekend but still isn't close.

Left Lane: Zach Barklage Runs 6.441/221.71, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.363/221.42, Was #9
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.418/211.73, Now #13; Best prior run: 8.074/115.95, Was #20

Ray makes a big improvement but doesn't get in the field. No improvement for Barklage.

Left Lane: Mel Eaves Runs 13.327/70.00, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.670/210.05, Was #19
Right Lane: Chip King No Time, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.459/217.49, Was #15

King gets out of the groove right off the line, moves to the left and then back to the right. He backs off the throttle but the rear of the car swings around and hits the wall. Eaves shakes the tires right off the line and shuts down.

Right Lane: Bill Hill Runs 6.492/217.60, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.547/214.83, Was #17

Hill spins the tires right off the line and will not improve.

Right Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 9.488/94.30, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.231/226.51, Was #1

McAmis shakes the tires, gets out of the groove and aborts the run early.
