ENNIS, Texas -- In an effort to bring his team to the next level, Bob Gilbertson has hired veteran crew chief Ed "the Ace" McCulloch as a tuning consultant for his O'Reilly Auto Parts/Quaker State/Raybestos/Trick Tank Funny Car team for the rest of the 2003 NHRA POWERade season. McCulloch, who has won as a driver 18 times in Funny Car and has 4 victories in Top Fuel, was most recently the crew chief for Ron Capps where he had 10 wins as a crew chief. Gilbertson's crew chief Nicky Boninfante, Jr., who asked McCulloch to come on board, is ecstatic over the deal. "I'm so happy to have Ed join the team" said Boninfante. "I worked with Ed at Prudhomme's and I know that his expertise and experience will be a big help in helping us step up for the remainder of the season." McCulloch added "I'm happy to get back out there and my goal is to help Gilbertson make his car more consistent and hopefully step up in the performance department. I've worked for some high-profile, well funded teams and the pressure to perform sometimes forced me to do things I didn't think would work in order to get down the track. This is a different situation and there is not a lot of stress there, he and his team are racing because they love to do it and after I take a look at their set-up I'll work with Nicky to make the changes needed to step up to the next level." Gilbertson, who is the owner and president of Truck Equipment Manufacturing Company based in Charlotte, NC, builds air and fuel tanks for both the military and truck manufacturers and also makes the popular Trick Tank, a portable aluminum air tank used by most racers in all forms of motorsports. "Having "Ace" as a tuning consultant is the final piece in the puzzle that will help us achieve our goal of going rounds and hopefully winning a race before the end of the season. We've only got three more races this year to do that but if anyone can help us do that it's McCulloch" said Gilbertson. McCulloch will join the team at this weekend's O'Reilly Auto Parts Fall Nationals at Dallas and will also be at the final two races of the season, Las Vegas and Pomona.
