Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 18th annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Keith Jackson Runs 5.323/243.57, Now #1

2:58 PM Current weather conditions: 78 degrees, 55 percent relative humidity, the barometer 29.82 inches, with a track temperature of 108 degrees.

Jackson gets to half track and starts hazing the tires. he stays on the throttle, then blows the engine just as he goes through the lights.

Left Lane: Cory Lee Runs 7.053/122.21, Now #3
Right Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 5.090/297.22, Now #1

Lee gets about 300 feet out, starts smoking the tires and has to shut down. A decent run for Burkart, right down the groove.

Left Lane: Jack Wyatt Runs 6.694/134.34, Now #4
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 5.097/297.12, Now #2

Wyatt gets about 400 feet out, strikes the tires and shuts down.

Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.607/151.36, Now #4
Right Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 8.721/93.75, Now #7

Cannon gets about 300 feet out, strikes out the tires and has to abort the run. Gilbertson was on a decent pass until a little past track, then something comes off the car, the chutes come out and he slows.

Left Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 5.782/167.41, Now #5
Right Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 6.087/154.18, Now #6

A couple of decent looking runs until about half-track, then they both strike the tires and shut down.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 7.709/105.32, Now #10
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 5.015/296.83, Now #1

A good run for Johnson, right down the groove, and he takes the pole for now. Pedregon was on a decent pass until just past the 330 foot mark, then he strikes the tires and shuts down.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.897/316.78, Now #1
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.028/253.73, Now #3

Wilkerson was on a good pass until half-track, then he starts losing cylinders. Scelzi made a great pass for the conditions and takes the pole for now.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.072/291.63, Now #4
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 6.250/142.90, Now #11

Worsham was on a good pass, ahead of Scelzi's incrementals at the 330, then he loses traction around half-track.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 8.474/90.82, Now #16
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.866/311.20, Now #1

Densham gets out of the groove early, gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke.

Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.955/314.24, Now #3
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 6.043/159.03, Now #12

Bazemore didn't qualify at the last race but probably won't have to worry about that here. He goes right down the groove, not missing a beat, and gets in the third spot. Pedregon strikes the tires about 400 feet out, pedals, strikes the tires again and gives up on the run.
