Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 18th annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Shawn Jones Runs 11.543/75.49, Now #17; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ron Rice Runs 6.737/170.35, Now #14; No Prior Run

Jones hits the throttle, the engine didn't seem to respond, pedals two or three times and finally gives up on the run. Rice was on a decent pass until 1000 feet out, then the engine falls silent, not sure why.

Left Lane: Ron Morrison Runs 5.789/227.67, Now #4; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Robert Lee Runs 5.693/254.81, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.726/250.13, Was #2

Morrison gets out of the groove early, drifts toward the wall, but hangs on for a decent pass. Lee goes right down the groove and runs a career best to get in the number one spot for now.

Left Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.709/252.88, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.955/248.07, Was #10
Right Lane: Tom Bristow Runs 6.124/238.53, Now #12; Best prior run: 9.679/88.49, Was #17

A couple of good runs here, Newberry moves up to the 2nd spot, Bristow gets in the shoe in the 12th spot.

Left Lane: Joseph Percoco Runs 6.241/224.55, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.334/215.98, Was #13
Right Lane: Jimmy Jones Runs 5.970/244.49, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.926/245.70, Was #10

Percoco improves on his first run but doesn't move up in the field. Jones slows and stays in the tenth spot.

Left Lane: Steve Burck Runs 7.456/152.05, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.661/216.19, Was #15
Right Lane: John Patton Runs 5.731/251.18, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.845/246.37, Was #9

Patton makes a good run, a career best for him, and he moves up to the fourth spot. Burck rattles the tires and heads for the wall. He pedals four or five times but never regains traction.

Left Lane: Tate Branch Runs 6.915/130.89, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.753/241.35, Was #5
Right Lane: Eddie McDow Runs 6.728/161.84, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.449/216.97, Was #14

Branch got to half track, lost power and coasted through the lights. McDow gets to the 1000 foot mark and the engine falls silent.

Left Lane: Jackie Stidham Runs 5.705/252.10, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.812/248.41, Was #8
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.673/255.02, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.710/252.73, Was #3

Left Lane: Thomas Frickenschmidt Runs 5.859/249.37, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.844/248.41, Was #9
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.743/248.41, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.809/249.03, Was #8

Payne was moving around a little early in the run but improves over his earlier pass. No help for Frickenschmidt.

Left Lane: Cy Chesterman Runs 5.656/256.62, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.868/139.44, Was #17
Right Lane: Mert Littlefield Runs 5.921/239.80, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.003/237.34, Was #11

Chesterman shook the tires in the first round and is not in the show yet. He doesn't have any problems here, going right down the groove and jumping into the top spot.
