LAS VEGAS -- Scotty Cannon plans to return to Pro Modified in 2004 as a team owner. The Lyman, SC.-based Funny Car driver made his decision based on the growth and popularity of the class in which he attained six world championships in the 1990s. Cannon has not revealed at this time whether he will drive the car or just serve in the capacity of directing the day-to-day operations of Cannonball Racing. Cannon admits this move was something that he's contemplated for quite sometime. "I never fell out of love with Pro Modified," explained Cannon. "In 1998 when I had won my last championship, the opportunity was presented to me to follow a dream that had been dear to my heart as a kid. I knew at that time that I wasn't getting any younger and if I wanted to pursue it, the time was then. I will always be grateful for the opportunity that Jim Jennard and Oakley provided me with." Oakley will provide major sponsorship for Cannon's Pro Modified endeavor. While the make of car has yet to be determined, Cannon has already started ordering parts. He will make the decision in the next few weeks as well as several more announcements related to the team. One of Cannon's largest fans will be Oakley's Jim Jannard. "I am happy to see Scotty back controlling his own destiny," explained Jannard. "He is exceptionally smart and talented and will make a terrific team owner. We consider Scotty a permanent fixture at Oakley and are proud to have the opportunity to grab the major sponsor spot on his car. Watch for great paint." Cannon has yet to commit to running a particular series, but is quick to point out, "I plan on running as many races as we are physically able to. We might even hit the match race tour as well. We're not ruling out anything at this time." Cannon has been inactive in Pro Modified since the end of the 1998, yet he remains the winningest driver in the class. He has 28 national event victories to his credit from 1991 in Bristol, Tenn., with his last coming in Epping, NH., in 1998. Cannon has 45 final rounds to his credit in Pro Modified. The closest driver to Cannon's record is Shannon Jenkins with 19 career victories.
